NEW YORK - The New York Yankees traded workhorse reliever Scott Proctor to the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit on Tuesday in a deal that could add some punch to their limited bench.

Betemit hit .231 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs with Los Angeles, which acquired him from the Atlanta Braves in a deadline deal last season. He played mostly third base with the Dodgers but is unlikely to see much time there with Alex Rodriguez in the midst of an MVP-type season for New York.
Yankees manager Joe Torre has complained about the significant drop-off offensively from his starters to reserves, and Betemit could be the answer. The 25-year-old switch-hitter also can play shortstop and second base and is batting .320 (8-for-25) as a pinch hitter this season. He had pinch-hit homers in consecutive games at Atlanta in May.
Proctor developed into one of Torre's favorite relievers last season, going 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA in an AL-high 83 games. It was the second-most appearances by a pitcher in club history.
"Scott has a record of durability and success in one of the major markets in the country," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "We see him as a solid addition to our bullpen down the stretch."
The right-hander is 2-5 with a 3.81 ERA and four blown saves in 52 games this year. He finished off a rough June by burning some of his equipment on the field at Yankee Stadium after a loss to Oakland, and has a 2.84 ERA in July.
"I'm glad Joe put me in as many games he did," said Proctor, dismissing a question about overuse. "It showed he had confidence in me and I have nothing but respect for him. I want to go out and pitch every night if I can."
Proctor was drafted by the Dodgers in 1998 and traded to the Yankees in 2003 in the deal that landed Robin Ventura in Los Angeles.
He gives Dodgers manager Grady Little another option to get the ball to Takashi Saito, who has converted 26 of 29 save opportunities. Los Angeles was in a virtual tie with Arizona for the NL West lead entering play Tuesday.
"That's exciting going there, but I hate leaving here," Proctor said. "It was a great organization and you hate that it's come to this but Betemit's a good player. Hopefully he can help the team here and on the flip side I hope that I can go there and fill a major role."
The Yankees were eight back of Boston in the AL East and four behind Cleveland in the wild-card race before Tuesday's games. They haven't missed the playoffs since 1994 — when the postseason was wiped out by a strike.

Because Farnsworth makes $7.2 million/season...MLB business is not like trading playing cards, actual money is involved in trading players. Not exactly a contract/performance that is marketable.

Betemit is great value...especially considering the amount of innings on Proctor's elbow...lack of bench...he can play 1st base (they dont want Phillips being every day 1B)...and insurance IF alex leaves via FA in off season.

I don't see the joke..?

Farnsworth has like 8 million left on his contract, impossible to ship.

Proctor throws hard but doesn't have command of his pitches, he's nothing special, and has hurt the Yankees more than he helped.

Yankees already have a plan for bullpen help with Chamberlain coming from the minors. If that works out I'd like to see a Joba/Vizcaino/Rivera combo at the end. That's not bad at all, in fact, I'd say it's rather good.

Betemit is the type of guy the Yankees were thinking about getting with Wiggington last week, only he's younger. Utility player, with power. He's coming in with only 3 more guys on the Yankees with more HR's. I also heard his numbers were decent pinch hitting, but I havn't seen them so I don't know. He could fill in at first base, and is an upgraded bat off the bench from Cairo.

I think it was a good deal for New York.

Edit: I see above me, Rev said 7.2. So corrected.

I understand what you are saying..But they could have paid some of that money to a team that would have taken him.
Farnsworth is no good for this team..after what happened the other day with Posada !!
No need for Any Pitcher to cross up your Catcher and then have a fight on the field...about it..
The Guy walked away from him ! That's not a Pro..

no doubt...Farnsworth is a douche...just they couldn't land anyone significant in a trade for him (assumption based on contract & performance), especially a player w/ Betemit type potential.

And I will be surprised if Farnsworth is a Yankee by end of season...especially after the Posada incident...maybe the Proctor deal changes their view, I don't know...but I would say odds are that Farnsworth will be eventually gone (maybe a clearing waivers scenario trade).

The only team that appeared to show any interest in Farnsworth was the Tigers, and on the off chance that the Yankees do make the playoffs could you imagine the motivation Farnsworth would have as a Tiger to stick it back to the Yankees if they were to face off against each other?

For once the Yankees held on to some of their pitching prospects - in the long term may turn out to be a better move than getting a washed up verteran that wouldn't guarantee another post season appearance anyway.

You're Right about the Pitching prospects....I am hoping in a Year or two that the Yanks have ALL young pitchers and maybe 1 vet..

One of the hidden values in dealing proctor away is that Farnsworth will now be forced to pitch more innings -- which is what he wants. As I've said before, he's a real emotional "headcase" type of guy. This gives him what he wants, and is a put up or shut up situation for him.

I'm optomistic that he'll show up, and be a rock in the 8th inning. If he can do that, I'd be plenty happy with a Vizcaino/Bruney 7th, Farnsworth 8th, Mariano 9th going into the playoffs.

The guy they really needed to deal away was Myers. That jerkoff is supposed to be a lefty specialist, but they're hitting .300 off him. Cashman should have traded him for a batboy and a couple hot blondes for the locker room.

The fact that they were able to get more than a sack of beans for this Proctor fella is a monumental achievement....we'll done Brian...as for the dodgers...play them 1st 5 innings... for the rest of the season...because that gas can will cost them at least a third of their games down the stretch...you can bank on it.........

As a Dodger fan I view this trade as very little for very little.

Agree with fucnluc here:

Chamberlain will be called up shortly and made trading Proctor much easier. He pitched out of the bullpen last night and will pitch once or twice more before being called up.

Junk for Junk

Betmit has been lousy since the dodgers got him and Proctor is an average reliever at best

As other teams will soon find out, both the Yankees and Red Sox are loading up and keeping cost controlled talented arms.
