Before I say anything else let me make it clear that the weakest part of this St. Louis team is their starting pitching. They are ALL capable of pitching a very good game and they are ALL capable of pitching a very bad game. The scary thing about it is from game to game you never know which one is going to show up. Although pitching is important in predicting the outcome of a game, it is still only one area to consider.

Tonight the Cards go with Brandon Looper (8-8 4.85era). In his last game he held the Cubs to 1 run and 5 hits in 7 innings of an 11-1 win. He entered the season with a 2.03era in 23 relief appearences against Pitt. and has posted a 0.69era in winning both his starts against them this year.

Pittsburgh counters with Tony Armas (0-3 6.93era). This will be his first start since May 17. The right-hander was 0-3 with an 8.46 ERA in seven starts before moving to the bullpen, where he posted a 4.98 ERA in 13 appearances.

I believe Pittsburgh would be very happy to get 6 innings out of Armas tonight. If that is the case and the game gets turned over to the bullpens again the Cardinals have a big edge as that is the major strength of this team. Last night the bullpen was uncharacteristic in giving up 2 runs in 3 innings. Don't look for that to happen again. In their last 10 games St. Louis is hitting .324 against RH pitching and Pittsburgh is hitting .247.

These two teams are streaking in opposit directions. Baseball is a game of streaks and once again I love St. Louis in this series. If we get the GOOD Looper tonight this should be an easy win. If we get the BAD Looper then it turn into a dog fight. But if Looper can just keep the game close until the 7 inning I like the Cards to win the battle of the bullpens.

3 ST. LOUIS -123

At first glance I loved the over. The umpire in this game, Randy Marsh, is 15-8 to the UNDER. That's enough to keep me off the over but if I was forced to bet it I would take the over 9 -120 I see now. G/L on your plays
