Overall, I think he was a pretty good manager. Took way more BS from fans than he should have. Class guy.

Good guy and good riddance. Bud Belly mangled quite a few situations in his stay here.

Examples? I think the players responded to him. They have played their best baseball since the fluke start of '03. Some of his in-game strategy could certainly be questioned at times (e.g. trying to bunt runners over in the 2nd inning when Elarton is pitching).

I kind of feel bad for him. I don't know whether or not he is a good manager, but the dude has taken some shitty, shitty jobs. I really do not know why a guy would take the jobs he has taken.

The Royals are a joke. It's sad that this team hasn't been competitive for over 10 years.

That is a perfect example. Not any gross strategic errors, just quite a few slightly annoying ones. It has been much easier on him when Dotel got healthy, but I think he mangled the bullpen quite a bit early in the year. There were times he should have let the hot hand pitch another inning instead of bringing in someone else to implode in the next inning.

Like the guy as a person though obviously, just excited as I think Moore can hire a much better manager.

Agreed. Has done pretty well since then. Of course talk radio is already full of Joe Girardi talk.

Have you seen the Pirates or the Reds lately...I think the Royals will be good in the next few years...

Not unless they get some money. They have some good young talent, but when year 6 rolls around, they are out of it come mid-July and faced with losing DeJesus, Gordon, Hochever, whoever, at the end of the season to free agency, they will continue to dump.

Girardi did a great job with the Marlins last year but he isn't going to KC. He's biding his time waiting for a situation where he can take a team to the playoffs immediately.

I will disagree with this on a number of fronts:

1. There are several teams that have been more competitive with a relatively smaller payroll than the current Royals.

2. Dejesus has already signed an extension. I'm cautiously optimistic, with some success and financial commitment from ownership, that they will continue to re-up other players.

3. They will always be a small market team. Therefore, they will always face challenges that the big markets will not face. I believe Dayton Moore and his staff- through scouting, the draft, free agency, and player development- will creatively build a ball club that will have the ability to compete for the division on a consistent basis. I'm sure plenty will laugh at this. I guess I'll just have to bump this thread in about, oh, 2011. GL.
