Me and my kid, who'll be 21 this month, ordered a couple of bottles from Germany. Although I'm not much of a drinker at all, I am going to have my absinthe-cherry popped soon. I'm interested to know how it went with you guys that have had a visit from the "Green Fairy".

Did you get an absinthe ritual going? To me, that's seems as cool as drinking it....the way you can light the drink on fire and heat the sugar cube.

There is a cool scene involving the entire ritual of drinking Absinthe in the movie Alfie. The re-make with Jude Law in 2004, not the original that made Michael Caine a big star back in the 60s.

Alfie (Jude Law) and one of his many women in the flick this one played sexily by older woman Susan Sarandan do the Green Fairy ritual and drink two shots of Absinthe before the movie lets you use your imangination as to what happens next. Sarandan tells Alfie that he will enjoy this and that she had to smuggle it back to NYC in mouthwash bottles. She uses the sugar and lights the shooters etc and then both using their acting skills after downing the shooters to by feigning "wow that shit is the bomb"..

Personally I have never drank it.

I understand it's powerful stuff so step lightly.

I think there is a big difference between brands - similar to the proof system in the US, one rum can be much stronger than another.

The stuff that makes it potent (and illegal in the US) is called thojune I think, or something similar, an herbal extract. You wanna get one with a high content.

I've tried it a couple times, and brought a bottle back from my last europe trip. It's not going to totally freak you out like an acid trip or how they show in movies, but I'll admit that the drunken feeling is definitely different than just beer or normal shots.

It's weird stuff. Tastes like black liquorish.

From wil's wiki link:

"Even though it was vilified, no evidence shows it to be any more dangerous or psychoactive than ordinary alcohol."

I heard if you drink enough of it you can go blind..

Probably an urban myth

Figures the US would ban something for which there is no real basis for it, only wise tales and OLD info from the temperance/prohibition days.

Its nowhere near worth the hype. You'll probably be disappointed. Make sure you do use the sugar--its pretty much undrinkable without it. Tastes exactly like black licorice. Its kind of just a different feeling. No visions, etc.

What makes/made the famous absinthe different from other drinks is that besides ethanol it contains thujone, a psychoactive convulsant found in several plants, in case of absinthe, it was extracted from wormwood.

ordered a couple of bottles from Germany

The absinthe was banned because of thujone, so currently made absinthe is wormwood-free. There are several alcoholic beverages including absinthe variants produced in very few countries in Europe that contain low doses of thujone, German is not one of those countries.

Since thujone is banned by FDA it is illegal for someone outside the US to sell thujone containing alcoholic beverages to someone inside the US. Thujone is considered poisonous, however, it is not controlled as a drug but as a food. So, if you want to find out what absinthe can do for you, you either have to make your own or go to Europe.

There was a thread a few years ago at a different forum about this.

He gave me the impression he hallucinated a bit, but he had fun with it.

Good luck with it. I be too skered to try it.

Earnest Hemingway is one of the most famous persons from a group of a long line of now long dead celebs that drank Absinthe back in it's heyday. The trick anymore is to get your hands on the real McCoy not imitation Absinthe which is kind of like anisette (licorice liquor) anyway. Another famous drinker of the "Green Fairy" was Vincent Van Gogh the controversial paintor from the turn of the century (also a distant relative of Whalewager)...

Website on all you need to know about Absinthe..

We had a blast with the Green Fairy last night. That stuff was awesome and I had an incredible high that lasted into the night, but yet no hangover this morning, and because I almost never drink these days, just 2 beers can hang me over. We went out on the patio, lit some candles and started on the ritual. I ended up mixing it with one part absinthe and one part chilled water, lighting the whole drink on fire and letting the sugar cube burn until it began to simmer before pouring the water in. I loved this part of the ritual, because part of me enjoys lighting stuff on fire. The taste was awesome.
