SCLC making plans to honor Vick

When the SCLC gathers this week to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and the promise of Barack Obama, the presence of at least one more major figure will loom large – Michael Vick.
During a press conference announcing the opening of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's 49th annual convention to celebrate the organization's 50th year, president Charles Steele noted that the organization would find some way to honor and recognize the embattled Falcon's quarterback who is under federal indictment on dogfighting charges.

We will work with anyone who opens their heart and arms to us," said Steele.
Steele added that it still isn't clear how Vick will be honored and it is uncertain that Vick will attend any of the conference's events, which run through Wednesday.
The SCLC's support of Vick is the most significant and prominent since he was indicted on July 18 on charges of running a dogfighting ring out of a home he owned in rural Virginia.
The indictment went into great detail to describe the fate of dogs that lost. They were killed by electrocution, drowning or being slammed to the ground.
If convicted, Vick could face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The quarterback has also lost most of his endorsements and is not in training with his teammates.
National and local reaction towards Vick has been mixed, particularly in the black community. Media mogul Russell Simmons and activist and former presidential candidate Al Sharpton both condemned Vick and called for his corporate sponsors to break ties with him. But last week, here in Atlanta, R.L. White, president of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP, held a press conference and rally urging the public and the media not to rush to judgment against Vick.
Moving forward with their conference, at 7 p.m. tonight, the SCLC will hold its "Jimmy Lee Jackson & 50th Anniversary Recognition Dinner at the Hyatt Regency. The Rev. Jesse Jackson will deliver the keynote at the dinner. Jimmie Lee Jackson was a 26-year-old civil rights protester killed February 26, 1965, by an Alabama state trooper, while trying to protect his mother. Jackson's death was one of the sparks that lead to the Selma to Montgomery march. The trooper who shot Jackson, James Bonard Fowler, was charged in May with first and second-degree murder charges and awaits a spring court date. He is out on a $250,000 bail.
Obama is scheduled to speak Saturday night and former President Bill Clinton is schedule to speak Monday afternoon at the ribbon-cutting of the organization's new international headquarters. Former SCLC President Joseph Lowery will speak at the sold-out awards gala Tuesday night.

Well, here you go, I had a black co-worker explain the whole Vick thing to me. Maybe this will shed some light for you...

Apparently "they" (whoever 'they' is) are still pissed about OJ getting off on the murder conviction so they are going to nail Vick on this one.

This is not ajoke...was copied from the Atlanta Journal website.

Some people might be trying to make this a race issue...but when Vick has one of his own "partners" up on the stand spilling everything he knows about Vick then the race card will be thrown out the window....imo

While he waits for his trial related to dogfighting charges to start, Michael Vick will be honored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

SCLC President Charles Steele announced Thursday during a news conference that the group will find a way to honor Vick during its national convention that began Friday.

"We will recognize Vick for being an outstanding human being," said Steele. "We will work with anyone who opens their heart and arms to us."

The president of the SCLC told Channel 2's JaQuitta Williams the organization will honor Vick by praying for him. Steele said supporting people in need is what the SCLC has been about for the past 50 years.

"We're in support of Michael as a human being," SCLC president Charles Steele said. "Right now, he's feeling discarded, ostracized by people who are rushing to judgment. It's our responsibility to save him."

Steele said he did not know if Vick will attend any of the events at the conference.

Former President Bill Clinton is a scheduled speaker and will cut the ribbon of the SCLC's new headquarters. Presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) , Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) , Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are also expected to attend.

The 27-year-old Vick has pleaded not guilty to charges of sponsoring a dogfighting operation. His trial begins November 26.

The most benign spin one can put on Michael Vick is that a dogfighting ring was being run out of his home without his knowledge for six whole years. To believe that Vick is simply a generous guy whose friends took advantage of him is to believe in the Great Pumpkin. To believe this you'd have to believe that there is no connection between Vick's purchase of the property in May 2001, the beginning of the accumulation of pit bulls from various states starting the following month, the "Bad Newz Kennels" gear they had made up. You'd have to believe that all of the cooperating witnesses who have testified to seeing Vick and his friends participate in dogfights over the next five years are lying. You'd have to believe that he had NO KNOWLEDGE of the kennels housing the dogs, the scars and injuries on the 54 dogs that were confiscated during the April raid and the "rape stand" used for breeding the dogs.

I'm not one to always take the word of law enforcement against a citizen, but if we learned anything from the O.J. Simpson case, it's that Americans are willing to blind themselves to just about anything, no matter how heinous, that a sports hero does. Mark Fuhrmann is the reason O.J. Simpson gets to walk a free man. But while Michael Vick has the right to defend himself in course, the evidence cited in the indictment is significant -- and disturbing. It's a mistake to convict him before he's even tried, but that doesn't mean that he should be honored right now by any respectable organization; and it sure as hell doesn't mean that presidential candidates ought to be there kissing the ring.

"We will recognize Vick for being an outstanding human being," said Steele. "

I heard Pacman Jones was runner-up and Barry Bonds made honorable mention.

You have to feel sorry for some of these sheep in the bible belt.
There's no way to say this without sounding a tad racist, but the SCLC is a Christian organization in name only. The truth of the matter is they are an organization totally run by blacks, for blacks, and they will support blacks in any circumstance. The word "Christian" affects very little of the organizations principles, decisions, etc.

I love how the three honorees command entirely different levels of respect. It's akin to the Braves having a ceremony for Warren Spahn, Kent Mercker, and Brad Clontz. Makes no sense.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what Vick did, what the evidence proves he did, or even if he's convicted or not. The "partner" will be branded a liar or an Uncle Tom or traitor to his race or something along the lines of the way Chris Darden was targeted. These people have an agenda (perpetual victimhood) and will never get past it - it is their reason for being. To his credit, Al Sharpton was one of the few black leaders to denounce Vick, but I expect him to back off and join the "if he's black, he's our guy no matter what" mob.
