Old lady and I are going to invest in some higher end cookware for our kitchen. Not looking to display it over an island or anything like that, just want some good, durable high end cookware that will be worth the price we pay (looking to spend around 5-600). Probably just basic 6-8 piece set...any info appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, and knowing where to purchase and where not would be great too!

Any stainless steel waterless is what I would go with. Make sure it is at a minimum 7 ply.

Here's a good site.. http://www.yourcookware.com/cookware-sets.html

DO NOT BUY NON STICK, it's all garbage...you want stainless with a copper core...Heat your pans preoperly and you never need non stick+ with non stick you can never achieve good carmelization or a fond from the meat for whICH TO MAKE SAUCES..

I would say having one non-stick pan is a good idea, but otherwise I agree with you.

I've bought various pieces of All-Clad stainless steel over the years and nothing beats it. You should stay away from the sets as they ALWAYS put in some pots or pans that you never use because they're too small.

This is about all you need for a great set:
2 quart sauce pan
4 quart sauce pan (2 of these or another 3.5q sauce pan)
9" fry pan
12" fry pan
10-12 quart stock pot (can be just about any brand but no thin bottoms)
8-10 quart Dutch oven
9" non stick pan
3q or 4q saute pan (get one with a helper handle)

I also use a paella pan frequently for risotto, bolognese sauce etc

Just as important are a good set of knives. I really like Henkel. Good quality for the price.
