In previous years wildcard teams in baseball weren't allowed to play their own divisional champion in the first round, even if their seeds were # 1 vs. # 4. Is this still the rule?

As a side question, does anyone know why baseball has this rule? Geographic diversity, maybe? It seems to me that if the Red Sox and Yankees each fear the other the most in the AL, then this rule will protect them both in the first round (assuming Y's = WC).

yes, the rule is still in effect. there will be no tigers/indians or red sox/yankees match up in the first round.
