"Who cares what their GPA and test scores are. They chose the school to play football and not for their academics. I think that college admissions criteria for athletes should change …"

Does he expect people to agree with him and support his crusade against South Carolina's admissions? This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard a head coach say.

It may or may not be dumb , but it is reality...and of course he may have been misquoted.

He is acting like he is the first coach to lose a recruit because of the admissions office. Be glad he is coaching at South Carolina. Did he never experience these problems when coaching at Duke?

Back then it wasn't as difficult, even at Duke.

That's not miquoted, it's misread.

That is a quote on ESPN's home page by a person on their message board named "finnepet", not spurrier

Back then each Division 1 school had 1 academic exception meaning that they could get one athlete through admissions. It was not any easier back then as the new rules were just being implemented

It was much easier when Spurrier was at Duke.

"Spurrier signed a contract extension, which included a raise of nearly a half-million dollars, that ties him to South Carolina through 2012. However, he said if things didn't change on admissions "then I have to go somewhere else, because I can't tell the young man that he's coming to school here," then not have him admitted"

-from the ESPN article

What a shithead. Play by my rules or I am going to coach somewhere else. Where else does he think he can coach and get every athlete through admissions? Grambling? Get real coach Spurrier, you are not bigger than your school's admission standards

I disagree

I already knew that.

So you think it was the same criteria in the mid 80's as it is today, okay. :ohno: a lot changed around 1996.

Also ,it is not always just the NCAA crieria that's keeping players off the field at SC, they make their own criteria on top of the NCAA.

I was a division 1 recruit and athlete in the late 80's. I know how hard it was for schools to get kids through the admissions office. You had one exception. That's it. Spurrier would not have gotten his 2 recruits into Duke then and he wouldn't get them in now.

Almost every school has their own acceptance criteria and not just SC

Whether you want to agree on Spurrier being right or wrong, it is kind of unfair for a recruit to be accepted by the governing board (NCAA), but not by the school itself. Usually it seems like it's the other way around, and that the NCAA is screwing the player. Spurrier, imo, is saying that it's tough enough to deal with the NCAA w/out a problem from the school. What's an even bigger issue is that the academic standards aren't uniform across the board for all schools. It's bullshit when a recruit can't get into one school (in a conference), but another one can take them right in.

For what it is worth, I have always been a Spurrier Fan. I am a Gator alum and have supported him his whole career.

NCAA requirements are easy. Should a good school decline the application of a great student just so they can admit an athlete who got a 750 SAT and 2.0 GPA? Some schools are tougher to get into than others. Just being an athlete should not get you in over a student with better grades and scores.

The Old Ball Coach seems to have forgotten that South Carolina is an academic institution that just happens to have a football program. Bobby Johnson at Vanderbilt, a team in Spurrier's own conference, I'm sure is having quite a chuckle over Stevo's whining today. Spurrier is getting a small taste of what it's like coaching outside of the football factory schools in Florida.

Gator alumnus...well, finally that explains it. I was wondering how you could always be wrong about everything.

First of all, the NCAA is an anachronistic organization, it has outlived its usefulness. When it was founded in the 19th century, the football/basketball players were indeed student-athletes. But now colleges serve as a minor league for the NFL/NBA in a symbiotic relationship which earns the colleges $millions. These athletes should NOT even have to attend classes if they so choose. There should be NO admission requirements for these athletes, and they should be paid to play. It is purely and plainly Un-American to say that only people of a certain intelligence level should be allowed the chance to earn $millions playing pro-football/basketball. What if we said the same thing about denying people of a certain skin color? O right, we did say that for a while and we as a society unanimously agree that was wrong. Same thing should apply to SAT scores and GPA....do away with them for athletes and let them pursue their athletic careers.

That was my final impression after seeing it. Misleading to say the least, IMO.

Maybe Spurrier will leave, and then comes to be Off. Coordinator @ Bama
Spurrier(Off. Coord.)+Saban(Def. Coord.)= national championships until they want to retire. I know, but at least let me dream
