SAN DIEGO (AP) — David Wells is finished with his hometown San Diego Padres, and it's possible that the career of one of baseball's most boisterous characters could be over.
General manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday that the Padres will cut ties with the struggling 44-year-old left-hander on Thursday in order to activate All-Star Chris Young from the disabled list.
Towers said he and manager Bud Black met with the Boomer on Tuesday night after the Padres' game in St. Louis.
"We informed him that he would not make his next start," Towers told The Associated Press. "We kind of laid out some options for him. If he still wanted to play, we'll designate him for assignment and see if other clubs have interest, or if he wants to hang them up, he can retire. We're waiting for him to get back to us."
Wells has struggled in his last four starts, including Monday night when the Cardinals tied a major league record with 10 consecutive hits in a 10-run fifth inning. He is 0-3 with a 14.33 ERA in his last four starts. He gave up seven runs and 11 hits in four-plus innings on Monday.
Wells couldn't be reached for comment. It was unknown whether he will retire or try to finish the season with another team. Overall, he's 5-8 with a 5.54 ERA this season.

Doubt he's done...a shitty four starts? Don't think that's cause for retirement. With all the action that surrounded some really mediocre pitchers around the trade deadline, I can't imagine a few hopefuls wouldn't be interested in Wells for the stretch run.

He's got to be at least as good as some playoff-hopeful teams' 5th starter. My Braves included most of the time...

Through the age of 33 he was 90-75 and had only won 15+ games in a year twice; thereafter he was 145-81 and won 15+ games in a year five times. Another ball player peaking in his late thirties; think he might have been on something?

Dont feel too sorry for him. He actually wanted to retire last year but saw all the crazy money being thrown around for starting pitching and said if he were offered a crazy deal he would pitch another year. San Diego took the bait and Wells picked up around 3 million plus possible incentives. Well, it is obvious he didnt get the incentives, but 3 million to pitch every 5th day (when he wasnt suspended) is pretty good coin.

22 starts and 118 innings for 3 million. He laughed all the way to the bank. He left yesterday for his ranch.

Poor guy.

Would be an upgrade from Wakefield in a BIG GAME situation.

Only 4 starts removed from a 4 games in a row team start winners only giving up 5 combined ER in those 4 starts.

Rod BEck,

As A BOSOX fan you know as I do as seeing WELLS as a CHISOX fan he has his ups and downs. When he is OFF his game, he is way off for years.

Fuck that fat tub of goo, he admitted that he bascially blew off an entire season with the White Sox because he was bummed about leaving the Skanks. Plus he got drunk and got his ass kicked by a midget in a restaurant.
Good riddance.

Yes - Jack and Cokes. :drink:

And yes, his time in Chicago was a joke.
