Suppose I am in another city and want to downloaded my horse racing computer program with the update programs from TSN (thoroughobred sports network) into the program and write down the computer's horse racing programs picks. Just like I was sitting here now in from of my computer.

Question--once I use a public computer at one of those pay by the hour places (or anyone else's computer); would any information that I have on my home computer such as passwords for banking information etc; be available to some hacker?

I hear good things about this "GOTOMYPC" on the radio, but is it safe?
I'm not a tech expert so unless it's very simple and safe -I would never use it.

I always wondered how it worked also. All our tech programs recommend it.

Try out logmein.com if you want to see how it works. There's a free version that works great and doesn't expire.

I use it on about a dozen pc's belonging to family members and it's pretty damn sweet to be able to take over control of the pc and see what they are seeing. Much easier than having a 70 year old aunt describe a program crash :)

The risk would be minimal to zero. Only risk would be if the internet cafe pc had a "keylogger" program and recorded all your keystrokes (so it would record everything including your login info using gotomypc or logmein or whatever).

Cybercafe type places scan routinely for these issues - so it's not something I personally would be concerned with.

Outside of that - no, you do your work in "real time" and there is no record of your acitivities.

Thanks ktvvegas. Sounds good.

I see what you're saying about keyloggers. Had read somewhere about that. One other thing on my computer, there is a program which came preinstalled with the computer called "Remote Assistance". Have never used it--because it sounds like potential trouble. Is gotomypc or logmein something similiar or very different from Remote Assistance?

It works on the same principle - it simply uses different protocols.

I use RealVNC to control my PC remotely - it's free and it's the fastest of the the bunch, IMO. I can log into my PC from any web browser by typing my IP address, I can use the standalone "viewer" application or even my Blackberry.

Risk is minimal if you password-protect it and use encryption.

Logmein and Gotomypc are both quite decent. I have set up a few people at the office with Gotomypc, and it works like a charm.
