I am looking for a firearm for self-defense. I am going to be going to the shooting range in a couple weeks to find something that works best for me. I've heard some say the shotgun because of the spray pattern, however that seems a little slow considering you have to pump the action.

One thing to consider is how far your bullets/shot will go before resting. You don't want to kill someone other than an intruder by having the shot go through drywall. I went out to a web site that shows how bullets and shot goes through several different layers of drywall. Check it out. It's called the Box O' Truth:

I've Got a knife and a retractable baton. Very hard to get a handgun in Vancouver legally.

the bigger question is if there was a knife and bat in the middle of the room, which one would you grab? (knowing the intruder would grab the other)

I'd get a knife. A bat doesn't work as well in small spaces, but a knife will.

I'd grab the Knife with out a doubt.

I'd say whatever gun you feel most comfortable with. A shotgun offers serious power and little need for aim, but it's not very nimble. A shotgun is good for general defense. It's also good if the city catches fire and the Joeyfitz types starting running amok.
For bumps in the night you will probably want a medium to large caliber handgun.

If all else fails, you can do like that one poster does and keep a can of mace on your key chain.

Most of the times (I supose) you are going to be facing someone who is not trying to kill you or that is armed with a deadly weapon (gun/shotgun etc), tasers are pretty good and after they get a discharge.....they are going to change their mood pretty much instantly, just take a look in youtube at how the offenders react when they get tased......and your legal trouble here would be minimal

In terms of 'stopping power' if you are thinking of a gun get a 9mm or a 40 SW (the 40 SW has enjoyed increasing popularity over the 9mm for quite a while), I own both calibers

In terms of versality the shotgun is pretty good in mid-ranges or if you are not a particularly good shoter.....keep in mind that there are several types (pump, bolt, lever, I am aware of semiautomatic shotguns but I have never seen one personally so I cant comment)

I also have a 9mm. I cop once told me for the home, a shotgun is best. The noise of racking one is very well known to crooks and usually gets rid of them.

I'd start by getting a dog.

a cop down here once told me that hollow point were illegal, I said to him "if they are illegal why do they sell them in every single gunshop" :ohno:

you better pick a big slug if you are going to use it in small spaces or else you will destroy your glass/can/paint collection/tv/dog/cat / wife................:suomi:

If I were you I'd get a tazer instead of a gun. It's non lethal and you won't have to worry about someone getting killed accidentally.

Thanks for all the responses. I hadn't considered a tazer. I suppose I could have a tazer AND a handgun in case the tazer missed or in case there were more than one intruders.
