SUNDAY NIGHT WINNER

SEAHAWKS V. CHARGERS!
(289) SEA Seahawks vs (290) SDG Chargers
Game Starts at August 12 2007 17:00 EST

Take (290) SDG Chargers

I'm laying the points with the Chargers on Sunday night. It's not often I will lay this many in the NFL, but the QB rotations, among a few other intangibles fall in favor of San Diego. First of all, Matt Hasselbeck was cleared to play, but will only be in this one for one or two series, giving way to Seneca Wallace. While Wallace is a veteran who understands this system, the Seahawks will be at a huge disadvantage once he leaves. Defensively, Seattle will be testing new looks and schemes on defense which will make life a little tougher when it comes to stopping SDG. The Chargers will go with Philip Rivers and the starters (sans L. Tomlinson) for the entire first quarter. Following Rivers will be the capable Billy Volek, who will play for at least two quarters, along with the second string. A half of football is quite a long time for second-stringers to play in a week-one, preseason affair. Second-year pro Charlie Whitehurst will finish the fourth. It's a team that seems to be bent on winning out of the blocks for Norv Turner. And I expect the Charger passing game to perform well against a new, revamped Seahawk secondary. We'll lay it with the Chargers on Sunday night.

MLB MOUND MISMATCH GAME OF THE WEEK!

(953) SDG Padres vs (954) CIN Reds
Game Starts at August 12 2007 10:15 EST

Take (953) SD Padres

I'm laying the price with the Padres on Sunday afternoon. Jake Peavy continues to roll and has received very little resistance both against the Reds overall, and in this park. The righthander is 4-0 in seven starts against Cinci with a 1.99 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. He's 2-0 in three starts at Great American where he's allowed just six earned runs and 22 base runners in 18 2/3 IP. That's a strong, 2.89 ERA & 1.18 WHIP. By the way, he's also been outstanding in day action. That's not the case for Bronson Arroyo who has been lit up on a consistent basis when pitching under the sun. Arroyo is 1-4 in five day starts, getting slammed for a 5.17 ERA and a horrible, .325 BAA. Look for the Pads to handle the righty, giving Peavy more than enough support. The Padres are my 4* Hammer.

SUNDAY NIGHT MLB BAILOUT BEATDOWN!

(979) TAM Devil Rays vs (980) TEX Rangers
Game Starts at August 12 2007 17:35 EST

Take (980) TEX Rangers

I'm laying the price with the Rangers on Sunday night. Tampa Bay righty Jason Hammel has made seven appearances this season, two of which were starts. In those two trips to the bump, the 24-year old has been popped for seven earned runs and 16 base runners, lasting just seven full innings. That's a pathetic, 9.00 ERA & 2.29 WHIP. In his seven overall appearances, Hammel has allowed a hefty, .359 BAA. That's good news for us when you consider Texas clocks righties in home night games for 5.6 RPG. That should be more than enough for Texas lefty Kason Gabbard. The youngster is now a perfect 5-0 in home starts, including his lone home outing thus far with the Rangers. We'll back Texas on Sunday night, our Bailout Beatdown.

My Las Vegas Insider is on the Det Tigers at 1:05 ET. Detroit's 5-2 win on Saturday was just its fifth in 19 games but combined with Cleveland's 11-2 loss to the Yankees, it moved the Tigers within one-half game of the AL Central-leading Indians. The Tigers are lucky to be in this position and I look for them to easily take care of the A's in this one. The A's have typically been one of MLB's best second-half teams but that hasn't been the case in '07, as Oakland is just 12-17 since the break. It doesn't help the A's that rookie Dallas Braden will take the mound, as he is still looking for his first win in nearly four months. He hasn't won in 11 appearances (eight starts), since he was victorious in his major league debut on April 24 against Baltimore. His ERA is 5.71 in those eight starts, although the left-hander has pitched better in the five starts since rejoining Oakland's rotation on July 16 (0-3 with a 4.28 ERA). That being said, Detroit is 22-12 (plus-$965) vs left-handed starters this year, averaging 5.9 RPG. Detroit will go with Nate Roberston, who's been a disappointment at 6-9 with a 5.03 ERA in 20 starts (team is 7-13). However, Robertson has allowed just three ERs in each of his last two starts and in his last outing, had nine Ks with no walks.

15* Pitching Mismatch of the Week
(5-1 this week and now 88-31 TY!)

My 15* play is on the SD Padres at 1:15 ET. San Diego's had a great one-two punch this year, as Chris Young leads the majors in home ERA (0.73) and Jake Peavy leads in road ERA (0.89). You read that right! In nine road starts this season, Peavy is 6-0 (team is 7-2) while allowing just 33 hits and a mere six ERs in 61 innings (opponents have hit just .156)! He leads the NL with 159 strikeouts and has not given up a run in 19 consecutive innings since allowing one in the first inning of a 9-4 win at Houston on July 27. In winning his last three starts (two on the road and one at home), Peavy has yielded just 10 hits, five walks and one ER while striking out 23 (0.45 ERA). He's dominated no division this season more than the NL Central, with a 5-0 record and 0.90 ERA in six starts. The only start he didn't win came against Cincinnati on May 16, overcoming a two-run first inning to hold the Reds scoreless over the next six before the Padres won it in the ninth, 3-2. However, San Diego has won all seven starts Peavy has made against the Reds in his career, as he's gone 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA. The Reds' Bronson Arroyo has pitched better as of late but after back-to-back 14-win seasons, his 5-12, 4.51 mark in '07 makes him no match for Peavy. The Reds almost NEVER win with him on the road (2-11) but are 6-5 in his home starts. However, a closer look shows that his road ERA (4.39) is actually lower than his home ERA (4.66).

15* Bailout of the Week
Devil Rays at Rangers

The D'Rays beat the Rangers 3-0 last night for their third road win in four games. However, let's remember the team had lost 19 of its previous 21 games away from Tropicana Field. I'll also note that since the conclusion of interleague play (on June 24), the D'Rays have gone 12-31 and the team's 45-71 mark represents MLB's worst record. The Rangers' loss was their 10th in the last 14 but while the team is just five games better than Tampa Bay overall (at 50-66), the Rangers (at minus-$416) are more than $1,400 better than the D'Rays (minus-$1,845) when it comes to the moneyline standings. I'll also point out that Texas is a respectable 29-28 at home (plus-$247). Expect the Rangers to win the rubber game of this series, behind the pitching of Kason Gabbard. The lefty can't be happy about having been traded by the Red Sox but he brings a 5-1 mark in nine starts (3.93 ERA) into this contest (teams are 6-3). He's had some trouble on the road (6.31 ERA in four starts) but in five home starts (four in Fenway), he's a perfect 5-0 with a 2.48 ERA (just 20 hits in 32.2 innings). Jason Hammel (1-1, 6.09) goes for Tampa Bay and he is 0-1 with a 6.06 ERA in four starts (team is 1-3) since joining Tampa Bay's rotation. In nine starts for Tampa last year, he went 0-6 with a 7.77 ERA.

New York Yankees @ Cleveland Indians u10.0 (-110)
Sun Aug 12 '07 1:05p

NY Yankees, Cleveland Indians Under 10

Do not look now, but Jake Westbrook of the Cleveland Indians appears to have turned his season around, while Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees is also in good form, so look for these teams to stay Under this double-digit total.

Westbrook was in danger of getting delegated to the bullpen not too long ago, but he has responded with three straight brilliant starts! He allowed just three runs on 11 hits in 21 innings over these three outings, translating to a 1 29 ERA and a microscopic 0.79 WHIP. Furthermore, Westbrook has made two career starts vs. the mighty Yankees here in Jacobs Field, and he allowed a total of one earned run in 13 innings in those outings.

As for Pettitte, he has now allowed three runs or less in six consecutive starts. He now has a nice 3.52 ERA on the road for the whole season, with the Under going 8-5 in those contests. He is backed by a Yankee bullpen that now sits just outside of the top10 in baseball in pen ERA, ranking 12th at 3.78 after a very shaky start to this year.

Finally, even with these clubs going easily Over yesterday, the Under is still 9-4-1 in the last 14 Indians games. We look for them to build on that streak today with this inflated number, as Westbrook keeps the red-hot Yankee bets in check.

Yankees, Indians Under 10 (-110)

Oakland Athletics (130)
Sun Aug 12 '07 1:05p

Oakland A’s +130 at Detroit Tigers

Nate Roberson has been a weak link in the Detroit Tigers rotation all year, so we feel that the Oakland Athletics offer nice value at this price.

Robertson is 6-9 with a 4.94 ERA and a high 1.56 WHIP overall, and he has actually been worse than that over his last four starts. He allowed 11, 10, 9 and 9 hits respectively in those four starts, posting a 6.39 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 25.1 innings.

On the flip side, Dallas Braden of the Athletics has allowed two earned runs or less in three of his last four starts. One of those outings came vs. these Tigers in Oakland, where he limited them to two runs and four hits in 5.1 innings of a 3-2 A’s victory.

Finally, the Athletics are now 6-4 so far this month, improving their August record to 186-106 since 1997.

Athletics +130

Take "(965) WASH Nationals

The Nationals Mike Bacsik will forever be known as the pitcher who gave up Barry Bonds record breaking home run. However, the Nations won the game, 8-6. In fact, the Nats have now won six of Bacsik's last seven starts. Arizona counters with Micah Owings who lost his last time out to the Pirates, 8-3. Owings is 3-3 at home this year with a 3.94 era though the D'backs have lost six of his 10 home starts. Nice little live dog here with the Nationals who win for this pitcher!!

Dave Cokin

Take "(960) ST Louis Cardinals

The Dodgers failed to get that big bat they really needed at the trade deadline, and they're paying for it in a big way right now. This team's offense is in the deep freeze and the lack of power is really showing right now. It's been a nightmarish campaign for Cardinals righty Anthony Reyes, but he's actually pitched okay lately and rates an advantage over Mark Hendrickson here. I'll go with the favored Cardinals.

Analysis:
Few things have been as dominating at San Diego's Jake Peavy on the road this season - with a perfect 6-0 record and brilliant 0.89 ERA. The talented right-hander is also a perfect 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA against the Reds in his career.

There's one POWERFUL ANGLE in this game Sunday afternoon - and that's the fact that Peavy has given up just ONE HOME RUN this season on the road and just ONE HOME RUN to the hitters in the Reds dugout today.

For a team that relies on the long ball in an offensive ball park - this is an incredible edge. Peavy is also a Mobile, AL native and I remember hearing the Padres broadcast team mention how he THRIVES in humid conditions - saying it takes very little time to warm up.

Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo is a dismal 1-4 during his daytime starts with a 5.17 ERA. The Reds also have lost all seven of their games versus Peavy overall.

Game: Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants Aug 12 2007 3:05PM

Prediction: OVER

While one player named Barry (Bonds) has been setting records in San Francisco and enjoying what some people would call a magical season, especially in front of his hometown fans, the other Barry on the team has suffered through what is so far easily the worst season of his eight year career. When they signed Barry Zito in the off-season, the Giants thought they were spending their $10 Million a year on one of the best lefthanders in the game, a Cy Young award winner (2002), and a player who, at 28 years old, should be coming into his prime. Instead what they've gotten so far is an 8-10 record and a horrendous 5.16 ERA. Zito's famed curveball has only worked occasionally and he has left far too many of his pitches right over the plate and the hitters in the league have been teeing off. Pittsburgh thought early on this season that THEY would have one of the new best lefthanders in the game in 26 year old Tom Gorzellany. Indeed, Gorzellany's numbers prior to the All Star Break put him at the top of the southpaw class with a 9-4 record and 3.10 ERA. But since then, the Bucs have only won one of Gorzellany's next four starts and his ERA for the second half is 4.84. As for Zito, Bonds is not the only Barry on the Giants with a home run record. Zito is leading the team this season in homers ALLOWED with 19. The over is 11-4 in the Pirates last 15 road games. Take the 'over'. As always, good luck...Al McMordie

Selection: Seattle/Chicago Over 10.5 (-110)

Today we expect a high-scoring game as the Seattle Mariners do battle with the Chicago White Sox. One reason why we expect a high-scoring game today is because both these teams will send to the mound struggling starting pitchers. This says it all... Mariners Starting Pitcher (Jeff Weaver) has a 6.23 ERA in his last 3 starts, while White Sox Starting Pitcher (John Danks) has a 5.40 ERA in his last 3 starts. It's clear that these pitchers will most likely continue to struggle today. This means we will see many runs scored today! Take the Seattle Mariners/Chicago White Sox Over 10.5!

Some may question taking the Cardinals behind Reyes, who's 1-11 with a 5.66 ERA, but he's shown tremendous improvement over his last 3 starts, going 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He allowed just 1 run over 7 innings to the Padres in his last one, despite taking the 4-0 loss, as his offense abandoned him.
That won't be the case tonight, as the Redbirds bats should be just fine against the struggling southpaw Mark Hendrickson, who's 0-2 with an astronomical 7.15 ERA his last 5 games (4 starts). Cards are averaging a healthy .282 against lefties at Busch... A bad sign for Hendrickson.
Dodgers have lost 7 of their last 9 games, and its not like they were close, as their bats have been errily quiet. It doesn't get any easier in St. Louis, where the Dodgers have won just 7 of their last 28 meetings there!
Bottom line, the Redbirds protect their house behind the resurgent Reyes, as he continues his personal improvement by outpitching the Dodgers Hendrickson in this one.
Take St. Louis behind Reyes over the LA Dodgers in afternoon MLB action.

Milwaukee has come from behind to beat Houston twice this weekend, winning in 11 innings Friday and then scoring a 7-4 win Saturday by scoring four ninth-inning runs. Today the Brewers will get it done a lot sooner. Claudio Vargas (9-4, 4.97 ERA) is on the hill for Milwaukee today and he is looking to end a horrible two game streak for himself. He gave up six runs on 12 hits in Colorado Monday in a 6-2 loss.
Vargas is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts against the Astros this season and three five shutout innings in a 3-1 win in Houston back on April 29. Woody Williams (6-12, 5.21) goes for Houston and he is 0-1 in two starts against the Brewers, giving up six runs in 12 innings in the two outings. Play Milwaukee in this one to use the momentum of the last two nights to lead them to an easy one today. The Brewers get this one easy today.

August 12, 2007 -- Hondo continued his inexorable march toward sol vency and points beyond last night when he scored with the Tigers in a Motown mow-down that slashed the debt to 130 dropos.

New York/Cleveland Under 10 (-110)

We expect a low-scoring game as the New York Yankees face-off against the Cleveland Indians in Sunday's MLB contest. The New York Yankees will use starting pitcher Andy Pettitte. Andy Pettitte has been pitching well as of late. In fact, Andy Pettitte has a 3.20 ERA in his last 3 starts. It's safe to say that the Cleveland Indians will struggle to score today. As for the Cleveland Indians, they will use starting pitcher Jake Westbrook. Jake Westbrook has been pitching great as of late. This is shown by Jake Westbrook's 1.29 ERA in his last 3 starts. In addition, the Under is 20-7 in Jake Westbrook's last 27 home starts. To say the least, the New York Yankees will struggle to score today. This game has all the signs of a low-scoring game!
