In the early 1900's a MLB pitcher was asked to start an unheard of 4 straight games...half of his team was en route to the next city when the train they were aboard derailed, stranding the entire pitching staff, except for the one pitcher who aquired the nickname 'the rubberband man' because of this, he started the following 4 games (including a doubleheader) until the team reached the next city where the stranded players were waiting.

He pitched a total of 30 of the 35 innings over the 4 days, the other 5 by the SS ...after throwing a shutout in game 1, he then allowed 5 in game 2, and 17 runs combined for games 3 & 4 (22 runs over the 4 games)

TRUE or FALSE - Was there a real rubber band man? :ughhh:

pitchers today are made for injuries the way the organization and coaches babysit their arms.

throwing more increases arm strengt and decreases the chance of injuries rather then the other way around

Did Doc Ellis really pich a no hitter tripping on LSD?

the SF/greatful dead affiliate has checked into the building. :ohno:

Doc Ellis was known for several bizarre events, despite being a very good pitcher eary in his career with Pitt.

including...

- beaning Reggie, in retaliation for the '71 AS game, tape measure blast in Det.

- attempting to hit every batter in the Reds lineup in a game in 1974. In an effort to prove a point to teammates, Ellis hit Rose, Morgan, and Dreissen in the top of the first....clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis' attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh....Can you imagine a pitcher lasting 5 batters into a game-throwing at every batter today???? LOL

- was maced by a stadium security guard for not properly identifying himself trying to enter Riverfront.

And today is a drug counselor. :lolBIG:

Hard to believe he's already been gone 12 years... think he passed away around this time of year in 1995 if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I read about that beanball gauntlet. He said he first knocked down Rose-"not to hit him, but to let him KNOW he was gonna get hit"-and then the sequence you described followed. Danny Murtaugh walked out slowly to the mound, stared intently at Ellis without saying anything for several seconds, then held out his hand. My how them drugs will do your mind...:smoking: :puppy:  :smoker2: :nohead:

That strange philosophy is one of the reasons I think today's players are better: in the old days, a relief pitcher was merely somebody who wasn't good enough to start, and seeing a tiring pitcher 3, 4, or 5 times was definitely an edge to the hitters. Compare that to facing hard throwing setup men and closers in your last couple of at bats...

Long guys today are no different, they are the guys 'not good enough to start'...

When you look at MLB history those pitchers from the 50's 60's 70's are really underrated, their place in history as the best pitching era will stand forever IMO....the entire game peaked in the late 80's.
