Stay with the hotter team at home. If Pittsburgh can get 3 in a row off the Giants in SF no doubt they can win the first game at home.

word is that Bonds may not play in either game

for sure, in game 2, bucs will start josh phelps as catcher for Youmans. he's not really a catcher so should be interesting. I'd guess they run on him every time they get on base...he's caught 2 innings in the last 6 years

He actually is a catch. The ONLY reason he is a Pirate was to play the position of a catcher as 3rd on the depth chart. He has been filling in at 1st once in awhile to give LaRoche a day off, but the main reason the Pirates signed him was as another backup catcher and he knew that coming here.

Also, LaRoche got the day off yesterday so he should be well rested and have a nice game in GM1.

The play is for sure Pirates in GM1 or no play at all.

Good Luck on your actions though guys.

Is this one of your locks? I hope it is so I can hammer the Pirates because you might be the worst capper I have ever seen. Ya kno for being a big gambler if you even wager the thousands of dollars like you say you do and always lose. You are pretty pathetic.

maybe i am missing something here..
i understand that pitsb won last 3 games on weekend. they have the hotter bats, but normally first thing to look at are starting pitchers.
Maholm is 7-14, 4.59 ERA. last start he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings (2nd loss in a row)
Cain is 4-12,3.77 ERA and 1-0,2.21 ERA in last 3 starts.
That s for me clearly in favour of SF.

I am not saying that SF will win as bullpen and recent weekend series point to Pitsb, i just dont know why anybody here on the board is at least mentioning the starting pitcher match-up.

Paul did lose 2 in a row but it's not like he is pitching terrible. He did give up 4 runs through 5.0 innings last outing but that was on the road to the first place Diamondbacks. The game before that is where he didn't get much run support.. he gave up only 2 ER through 6 innings and that was his 4th quality start in a row and 6 out of 7. He is 2-2 since the all-star break with a much better ERA than on the season. He has been pitching very well lately hence the 7 quality starts out of his last 10 games compared to 2 quality starts out of his first 13 games.

you can call him a catcher if you want. he has caught 2 innings in 6 years but 440+ innings at First Base

just listened to him interviewing on 970 and he certainly does not consider himself a catcher. Basically said that at least Youmans does not have a lot of movement on his pitches and he'll "do his best" tonight but only caught 1 inning this year with the Yanks and none since 2001. Seemed very nervous but he can't be much worse defensively than Paulino, right?

Correct.. Paulino is nothing more than an average catcher and a terrible batter. At least Phelps is a much better hitter than Paulino. That must also be taking into consideration.

you are looking at full season stats not recent stats. The sad fact is that Maholm has been the Pirates best pitcher since the A-S break. Prior to that last start he'd not allowed more than 4 runs in any of his last 7 starts

Cain looks to be pitching well too with 3 straight "quality starts"

btw, if there's any props out there on strikeouts that should be considered. Cain has K'd 21 in his last 3 starts while Maholm has K'd 21 in his last 6

thx guys, that means we have two (in recent starts) solid starting pitchers. so the under seems to be the play here..maybe even better the under for first five innings.

The under is kind of scary for the fact that the Giants bullpen is pathetic and the Pirates averaged 8.7 runs per game against the Giants in SF.. only God knows what could happen in Pittsburgh.
