Detroit +1.76 over CLEVELAND
From what planet must one be from that chooses to play the Indians here laying more then –1.80. Pulling the trigger on the Tigers here should be one of the easiest decisions of your gambling career. The Indians are a huge price because the Tigers have called up a guy, not from Triple-A but from Double-A Erie named Jair Jurrjens. Jurrjens made 19 starts at Erie and his ERA over that stretch covering 112 innings was a modest 3.27. However, over his last three starts he’s been downright dominating, throwing 23 innings while allowing just 12 hits, two runs walking one and striking out 24. He’s been so impressive that the Tigers couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to promote him all the way up to the major league level and that’s a positive sign not a negative one. Besides, the Indians are seeing BB’s and the following is a list of the starting pitchers that the Indians scored two runs or less off of over the past month: Jerry Bonderman, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Phil Hughes, John Danks, Scott Baker, Matt Garza (twice in one week), Brandon McCarthy (twice in 11 days), Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and Mark Buehrle. That’s 16 times since July 18 and when you throw in a bunch of defensive players that are an error waiting to happen along with a horrible bullpen and a team that has lost four in a row and 11 of 16, what appeal do the Indians have at –1.84? How about none and the only way we’d be passing up this opportunity is if Ernie Harwell were pitching for the Tigers and even then we’d have to think about it. Huge overlay. Play: Detroit +1.76 (Risking 2 units).

NY Mets –1½ +1.09 over PITTSBURGH
So, let’s see if we have this straight. The Pirates brass got together prior to the trading deadline and had a conversation that went something like this.
Pirates GM: Ok, listen up, the fans and media are getting restless and we need to make a deal that will strengthen our credibility.
Pirates assistant GM: Ok boss, you’re right. Word is that Matt Morris is available and his contract is only 10 million a year. He’s just 33 years old and he’s been ripped a new rectum in about 16 of his 21 starts so far this year pitching at that pitchers park in San Fran. We need to get him.
Pirates GM: Do it and do it fast.

Is that not unbelievable or what? It’s absolutely mind-blowing that the guys making these decisions A) have a job and B) get paid. Not only did they sign a stiff they needed like a hole in the head, they gave up a prospect and relieved the Giants of a huge contract. What a joke. Matt Morris was shocked and extremely upset that he was traded to a team that had a worse record then the Giants. Said Morris, "It's tough to comment on, what can I say? It shouldn't have been that much of a shock when I got the news, but it's such a change. Pittsburgh was never brought up before. That's a team that wasn't even in the cards. It's just different and I'll deal with it. They weren't really on the list. That's the shock part of it". So, to recap, Morris is upset and his heart and mind is not in this thing and when you throw in a lack of talent it’s no surprise that Morris had his ass handed to him in both starts in his new gear. In 12 innings he was tagged for 16 hits, 10 earned runs, walked six and struck out four. The two teams he faced, the Reds and the Giants hit a combined .356 off him. After a three game sweep at San Fran over the weekend the Pirates got right back to being the Pirates by losing their last two and with John Maine facing an uninterested Matt Morris, this ticket is a very cashable one indeed. Play: NY Mets –1½ +1.09 (Risking 2 units).

ATLANTA -1½ -1.17 over San Francisco
For the first time all year we’re going to endorse laying 1½ runs and juice in the same game because this looks like one of those 10-run blowouts. The Braves are not going to lose to the pitiful Giants and the biggest stiff in the game, Russ Ortiz. Ortiz lost it in 2005 when he pitched for the D-Backs and his ERA that year was 6.49. He’s pitched for four teams since ’05 and each team couldn’t get rid of him soon enough. Not only has he been brutal as a starter this season but he’s about to face perhaps the most prolific offense in the game, not to mention a hot and very motivated Braves squad. Tim Hudson is the straight goods and he’s been lights out recently, winning three straight starts and his last seven decisions. Atlanta has not lost a game that Hudson has started in two months. In 164.2 innings, Hudson has surrendered just four jacks. Amazing. The Giants have thrown in the proverbial towel on the year, having won just three times (two over Washington, one over Pittsburgh) in their last 13 games. Can this one go any other way? We think not. Play: Atlanta –1½ -1.17 (Risking 2.34 units to win 2).
