BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Former All-Star Jose Offerman was arrested Tuesday night after charging the mound and hitting the pitcher and catcher with his bat during an independent minor league game.
Bridgeport police said Offerman was arrested, but did not detail the charge. Police said he posted bond.Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League, homered in the first inning. The next inning, he was hit by a pitch from Bridgeport's Matt Beech and charged the mound with his bat.
Offerman hit Beech in the hands and struck catcher John Nathans in the head.
The game was delayed for about 20 minutes because of the melee. Offerman, Beech and Bridgeport manager and former major league pitcher Tommy John were all ejected.
There was no immediate update on the condition of Beech or Nathans.
Offerman batted .273 during his 15 seasons in the majors. He last played in the majors in 2005 with Philadelphia and the New York Mets. He was an All-Star in 1995 with the Dodgers and 1999 with Boston

a fastball thrown to the head can do some serious damage. The Pitcher should have been arrested as well

I'm more shocked that Jose Offerman hit a home run, to deserve a retaliation.

I'm more shocked that Tommy John is managing in an independent league. Can't he get a job as a pitching coach, or at least a triple A manager somewhere?

was a curve-ball that hit him in the calf, not a fastball to the head.
if you charge the the mound with anything but your hands, you're a punk.

I heard the radio re-broadcast of that play, and Carl Everett (Yes that one), was one of the peacemakers. What next PacMan Jones playing baseball?

Folks around here enjoy catching up with old Red Sox friends, but it seems like we catch up with ex-Red Sox infielder Jose Offerman more often than we do with others.
And it's never for a good reason.
Offerman, manager of the Licey Tigers, threw a punch at an umpire during an argument in a Dominican winter league game Saturday night, the second time in 2 1/2 years that he's attacked someone on a baseball field. The incident was captured on video (above).
The following is an account of the incident from the Associated Press:
Offerman appeared to hit first base umpire Daniel Rayburn in the face or neck with his fist during a heated discussion in a game against the Cibao Giants. Rayburn fell to the ground. Offerman was detained by stadium security and taken to a police station to wait until the end of the game to see if Rayburn would press charges.
The Giants were winning, 6-0, in the third inning of the final game of the winter league semifinal playoff series when plate umpire Jason Bradley ejected catcher Ronny Paulino for arguing balls and strikes.
Offerman came onto the field to talk to Bradley, but ended up arguing with Rayburn.
It was the latest violent outburst by Offerman, an All-Star infielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995 and Red Sox in 1999.
On Aug. 14, 2007, he was batting for the Long Island Ducks against the Bridgeport Bluefish in an independent minor league game when pitcher Matt Beech hit him with a fastball. Offerman charged the mound with his bat and swung at least twice, striking Beech and Bluefish catcher John Nathans.
In February 2009, Nathans sued Offerman in US District Court in Bridgeport, seeking $4.8 million in damages. Nathans said the attack left him with permanent, career-ending injuries.
Offerman last played in the big leagues in 2005 with the New York Mets. He batted .273 during his 15 seasons in the majors.
