OT: Who has a TiVo?

I'm about to get a DVR, I just can't decide whether to buy one from TiVo or rent one from my cable company (Cox). The monthly fees work out to be about the same, so the only question is whether it's worth it to spend the money to actually buy the TiVo box. Is it?

I've done about an hour of research, and so far I can't find enough good things about the TiVo to justify spending an extra $100 for it. But I've heard that TiVo users are very loyal, crazy about their TiVos, and would never think of using anything else. Are there any of you like that out there that can convince me TiVo is the way to go?

Any opinions / experiences / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've got a DVR and assumed they did the same thing. WHy pay extra money and have an extra box when you can just get a DVR box from your cable company or Direct TV.

Thanks WharfRat. That's what I think, but I want to be sure I'm not missing something.

I have a dvr from the cable company and I love it. I can't imagine not having one. I hate to watch tv without it because I like skipping the commercials. The only difference I see is how many hours can you record on the Tivo vs the DVR?

I have a TIVO and have had it for two years. I love the think and can not imaging not having it. I find myself thinking about TIVO everytime I watch TV without it. But I don't think that I love TIVO more than the technology of DVR. I got TIVO because I have directv and it comes with it. I would just get the free one from the cable company. I am looking at getting the upgrade HDVR but don't know if I want to spend the $200 for it, but I probably will once football starts.

Yea, I can't see paying for a Tivo when the cable company has them.

Thanks guys, I'm definitely leaning toward the cable box now. But where are all the TiVo purists I've heard about? Are they an urban legend? Maybe they're too busy playing with their TiVo to come post on TheRx.

Tive\DVR....no difference.

I think I got stuck $100 up front & $5-8 a month for it. I guess it's worth it-it's always cool to pull up a big bowl game from last year to help me through the summer(and various other shows that you just snag because they're worth a laugh some other night).

I hav one of the original TiVo's. Can't speak for if there is a big difference between that and what the cable company offers. I know if you really want the brand-name they frequently offer rebates that knock the cost to nothing.
As far as TiVo/DVR, you will not know how you watched TV before. The convenience of watching shows/movies on your times, skipping through commercials, and the endless down time of sporting events is well worth the small monthly cost.
I literally have a hard time watching sports in real time because there is so much downtime and commercials that watching it with one finger on the fast forward button of the TiVo saves so much time. 3 and 4 hour games take you about 40 minutes to watch without missing any important action.
