According to a published report, New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will likely decide this week if he will return to the team or officially walk away from the game.
According to Newsday, Strahan, who has missed all of training camp while contemplating retirement, could rejoin the Giants as early as this week. The newspaper also cited an anonymous source as saying that Strahan's agent, Tony Agnone, had a meeting with Giants general manager Jerry Reese on Sunday.
Agnone is based out of Baltimore, where the Giants played the Ravens in preseason action on Sunday night.
The seven-time Pro Bowl selection has been fined over $14,000 on a daily basis for not reporting to camp.
If Strahan decides to retire, he would leave a sizeable hole on the Giants defensive line. With 132 1/2 career sacks, he is tied with Hall-of-Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor for first in franchise history. Both Giants are tied with Leslie O'Neal for seventh in league history.
The 35-year-old Strahan owns the NFL record for sacks in a single season with 22 1/2 in 2001, and he also led the league in sacks in 2003, when he compiled 18 1/2. He registered 11 1/2 sacks in 2005, but was limited to only three sacks in nine games in 2006, when a Lis Franc sprain to his foot cut his season short.
Strahan has played in 200 career games -- all with the Giants -- and has amassed 794 tackles.
