Vick copped a deal...big surprise. Like OJ, everyone knew he was guilty but the thing that kills the Falcons is the money cap hit they will take for the next three years for nothing. No service provided by Vick to the tune of 7.5 million dollars per year.

Is this asanine or just me? I mean I can understand the 'football careers are short' argument so they want guaranteed money but the jackass owners need to put clauses into these argreements that pertain to the off the field antics of some of the thugs which the NFL has embraced. Why not guarantee the money but void the contract if they violate the nfl personal conduct policy? Something along those lines.

well, there are only like 2 contracts in the entire league that have guaranteed money, so that is a moot argument. Contracts are front loaded with huge signing bonuses b/c they are NOT guaranteed. At its most basic, the signing bonus is amortized over the term of the entire contract for salary cap purposes and if the contract ends sooner than its term, the team has to accelerate the unamortized signing bonus.

So, your point isn't one. Vick's contract can be terminated and they won't have to pay the remainder of the contract (assuming his isn't one of the few guaranteed contracts). However, the reason for the termination has no bearing on the salary cap implications.

I wonder how many other athletes are trying to unload their fighting pits at this time.

Probably just gonna leave them on the side of the interstate.

I have not seen Vicks contract, but 44 is correct, NFL players only get their signing bonus. If they don't play they get ZERO.

44 is correct...

also of note...rarely happens...but the signing bonus is not exactly 100% guaranteed...Falcons could very well go after the signing bonus, in their next step. But very rare.

Not sure but I think The Dolphins could have, and might have gone after R. Willams signing bonus. Nfl contracts are not guarentted until I believe after the 6th game of the season. After the 6th game they have to pay the remainder of all contracts.

Michael Vick was the face of the Atlanta Falcons franchise, but his NFL career could suddenly be over because of his alleged involvement in dogfighting.

Assuming the Falcons would not welcome him back as their quarterback, Vick might have a hard time getting a second chance to play in the league. The team willing to give him that chance would have to endure a major public relations backlash for his alleged involvement in a blood sport.

Here are questions to consider regarding the quarterback's future on the field if he were to plead guilty to the charges against him:

What will the Falcons do?
Atlanta owner Arthur Blank likely would not let a felon convicted of dogfighting run his team. The question is how Blank would handle Vick's exodus. Cutting him would be the easy thing to do, but terminating Vick's contract could disqualify the franchise from claiming more than $22 million of signing bonus proration.

Vick has three years left on his contract, including this season. If he is unable to play in any of those seasons because of legal action, the Falcons can make a legal case that he failed to fulfill his contract, then claim the annual $7.5 million of signing bonus proration. Vick signed a 10-year, $130 million contract, and the Falcons can't go back and get money he earned by playing. But it makes good business sense to go after the money he collected in signing bonus even if it means keeping him on the roster while he serves any prison sentence and a possible NFL suspension.

That the Falcons are going to take a salary hit of 7.5 million

They haven't cut him, they may or may not have to pay him $7.5mm, but unless and until they cut him, they will absorb a salary cap hit of $7.5mm.

Two different things, paying and salary cap. Presumably they could cut him at any time and wouldn't have to pay the $7.5mm, but they would still suffer some level of salary cap hit.

Most likely they go after the signing bonus. Most signing bonuses are contingent on certain things like not riding motorcycles, not doing things detrimental to the NFL's image, etc.

tampa right now is trying to get jake plummer's money back due to his early retirement.

am attempting to discern the source of Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen's vendetta against Jake Plummer. Is he upset that he can't collect enough mediocre quarterbacks to fill his scrapbook? Did Plummer jump into his Honda Element one day and promptly run over Allen's dog? Or is Allen just trying to show franchise owner Malcolm Glazer that he means business in a feeble attempt to save his job?

Whatever the reason, Allen is leading the charge to punish Plummer for doing his team the discourtesy of walking away from football. The Bucs have filed a grievance against Plummer in an attempt to recover up to $7.5 million of Plummer's signing bonus, presumably for breach of contract. The Denver Broncos have joined in the grievance, too, since they paid the bonus in the first place.

"There are consequences to not reporting to camp," general manager Bruce Allen noted, somewhat ominously, on the day Plummer failed to report two weeks ago. "We treat him just like any other player who did not come to camp."

"A player [under contract] can't just unilaterally retire," Allen said.

Uh, yeah, tell that to Mike Alstott. Or does it not count if your head coach is trying to get rid of a guy?

Whatever the situation, let's just hope that Allen doesn't push too hard and cause Plummer to use that Honda Element to re-enact Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex.
