DETROIT (AP) -- Craig Monroe quickly found himself back in a pennant race Thursday when the Detroit Tigers traded the slumping outfielder and cash to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later.

The Tigers designated Monroe for assignment last Friday and replaced him with highly touted prospect Cameron Maybin.

The NL Central-leading Cubs will send a player to Detroit by Oct. 15. Detroit is close in the AL Central and wild-card races.

Monroe is scheduled to join his new team Friday night at Arizona. He has played all three outfield positions in his major league career.

The 30-year-old Monroe, who had lost his starting job in left field to Marcus Thames, was hitting only .222 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs in 99 games.

Last season, he helped the Tigers reach the World Series for the first time since 1984.

Monroe batted .255 with 28 homers and 92 RBIs last year, then tied a franchise record by hitting five home runs in the postseason. He also tied for second among AL outfielders with 12 assists.

Monroe signed a one-year contract for $4,775,000 in the offseason, getting a raise from $2.8 million.
