.. is that when the lead at AllStar was 12 or whatever, you should have scoped out a reasonable number in which Yanx would have been within 5 or 6 but probably no closer. Okay, it got to 4 but point is that focus should be HOPING on wild card. New Yorkers have a hard time accepting this but in the end they shoud not care less. If they attain wildcard, they are in playoffs and can knockoff sox. Really doesnt matter who wins AL East but yeah extra home game COULD be huge but...

All this jabber about ho0w they would catch Sox once they got to 5 games was inane. Again, consider ebb and flow. Too many fans/bettors do not have the ability to step away and look at big picture. they llook at last few performances and put far too much weight on that.

This is not a ra-ra RedSox post and as a rule I distance myself from those who view the Red Sox as religion. But you dopey Yankee fans really need to shut the fuck up!

You are aware that people that post here are fans and not the real life baseball players. Focusing on the Wild Card vs. the Division does not make a difference.

Every time i think Sox fans couldn't get any dumber, they always manage to surprise.

I spent 3 years in boston, and i swear this type of fan was sitting at every bar stool in boston.

Nope. You are dead wrong Primetime. You will NEVER find anyone more fair than I when discussing sports. I give all their due -- I have no agenda but I do anger those that pull too hard for 'their' team. Clearly you are one of those NewYorkers who ventured north and had a problem with Bostonians being as arrogant as NewYorkers... surely you thought your people were entitled to that but found out differently. IF you make playoffs be thankful and enjoy best rivalry in baselball.

FWIW, most fans are hypocritical and cannot view a game involving their home team on even footing. Agree?

Just can't seem to think that a boston fan posting about "idiotic" yankee fans is someone that i would consider "fair." Agree?

Only towards those Yank fans that have made idiotic statements towards Sox being "done" and such. Similar to Sox fans "sticking fork in Yanks" playoff hopes back in June.

Yankee fans better hope they don't draw the Angels in the first round of the playoffs and not worry so much about catching the Red Sox.

How about this... I say nobody better hope for the Yankees.
Now what?

Every team that makes the playoffs will be tough as they are all obviosly good teams having survived 162 games to be the best four in each of their respective leagues.

Saying things like nobody wants to face the Mariners or Yankees is great, but no team is looking forward to playing the Angels or Red Sox at this time also as they have proven they are the two best teams in the AL up to this point.

Dont agree Sox have been an avg team since the allstar break and Yanks have been the opposite so why would I think the Sox are better at this point?

Pitching and defense. Boston has given up the fewest runs. Yankees are only better than 4 teams in the AL. Also look at the competition the Yankees have faced after the all star break. Give them crediti they are winning but 8 games against tampa, worst in the al, 3 against white sox, second worse record, 7 against KC 4 worse record, 7 against Baltimore 5th worse record, 7 against Toronto 7th worse record. Majority of their games so far against the bottom half of the league. Played Angels and lost 2 out 3. They did beat Cleveland a divisional leader, although the central division teams are slumping badly the second half.

lead was 9 at the all star break. 9. Yanks have made up 2.5 games since. Yankees have played very well and have their chance especially for the WC. Big September coming up.

Since the All Star break there is little to choose from between the two teams.

The Yankees are 30-14 (23 on the road)
The Red Sox are 26-17 (22 on the road).

Not counting today's games.

Over all records are:

Boston 79-51 (18 home games left out of 32 remaing games)
New York 72-57 (16 home games left out of 33 remaining games)

The Red Sox magic number is 27.

Opps

Make that Yankees 72-58 on the season as they just lost to the Tigers 5-4 in Detroit.

And while I am at it I might as well mention the Red Sox are now 80-51 (best record in baseball) for a season high 29 games over 500 ball as they finished off a 4 game sweep of the White Sox in Chicago with an 11-1 ass kickin..(how bad have the WSox fallen in two years).

Red Sox new magic number to win the East is now 25.

I suffered through one of my worst nightmares last summer when I attended DRays game hosting the Chicago White Sox.

Sitting behind me, via random ticket purchase in two sets of two seats is YankeeFan and RedSoxFan

Both are geared out with caps and some kind of supportive Tshirt.

Remember this is at a DRAYS GAME in St Petersburg.

First inning a little bit of rap about the current standings and the past few days.

Then it gets going.

YankeeFan tells SoxFan he won't get over because, "You always choke when it counts"

SoxFan retorts, "2004 Baby.....Biggest collapse in postseason history!!"

YankeeFan comes back with, "29 Rings Baby versus two in 85 Years!!!"

SoxFan retorts, "2004 Baby...biggest collapse in postseason history!!"

YankeeFan - "One time in EIGHTY FIVE YEARS"

SoxFan - Biggest Collapse in postseason history!!

THIS WENT ON FOR LIKE SIX INNINGS NON STOP, gradually increasing in volume as they increased their beer intake.

Both guys speaking with way overblown Northeast accents matching their respective teams....Both guys slightly bowing up so as to not look weak in front of their female companions.

Fortunately, the DRays game was like 8-1 in the seventh, so they both bailed out.

Gotta say though, that there's nothing more pathetic than listening to RedSox fan trying to make like his team has even a scintilla of comparison vs the Yankees historically.
