define a "square" player

The thread about booking squares made me think. Would we all agree on the characteristics of a "square" player?

Here were my thoughts:

Squares generally have little understanding of money management. Squares drink alot while watching the games which causes them to bet foolishly as the day goes on.

Squares like to increase their play as the day goes on.
Squares chase on Sunday / Monday night games
Squares love parlays.
Squares like betting on the NFL more than CFB because they "know" the NFL teams better than the college teams due to television.

I'd be curious what others think.

Squares like to play the obvious.
Squares like to play what the public or ESPN likes
Squares spend to much time researching per game.
Squares play over hyped teams.
Squares do win sometimes, but in long run lose.
Squares don't look for value in play.
Squares follow stats & trends.

sounds paradoxical but ....

squares spend their time worrying who the public is on and try to read into every line possible.

A square is someone who calls another poster a square or someone who uses stupid general terms...

You are a winner or a loser and it is that simple.

If you bet every side and total on MNF you are square.
If you bet parlays daily you are square...and stupid.
If you try and 'get out' every week when down on SNF or MNF you are square.

All of us on this forum, except for maybe 3 or 4 posters.

Don't have to work to hard to make money with numbers like that.

Other than maybe a handful on here, yes I do.

I've made alot of money this past year and hardly have a losing week anymore but I am still a big square.

Speak for yourself, there are plenty of sharps on this forum. :suomi:

There is nothing inherently "square" about betting parlays.

In fact, an advantage bettor seeking to maximize the expected growth rate of his bankroll (i.e., a Kelly bettor) would bet substantially more parlays than straight bets (although for considerably smaller dollar amounts).

1) Squares don't care what the line is when they bet.
2) Bad money management
3) No concept of long term, only look at the short term
4) No record keeping
5) Don't really care to learn more(visit forums etc.)
6) Haven't read Wong's "Sharpsportsbetting" book by now
7) Will not order King Yao's new book on sports betting because he thinks he doesn't need to

I'm both... cuz i have the money to be--and i know i'm a dumbass for it. who needs a client? >:p jk.

BUT, I don't think spending too much time on one game should make you considerable to a square. I used to tout and I researched 2 or 3 games a day (sometimes up to7-8) taking up around 8-10 hours a day. It might not have been worth it with the returns but I did it really just to prove that you can win sports betting. I was around 65-70% for a lonnnnng time and was above 60% every day for freakin I don't know how long. Either way--if I had the balls to actually throw $1K on everygame I wouldn't be here on this forum but I just played relatively small.

By the way, I only charged $60 for a season... it's not like I was really trying to rip people off. It was more of a security blanket for me betting so small. I had up 15 people I think and 6 who would regularly talk with me.

Now I have the BR to play big--but I don't research as much so I lose my ass. Great feeling, isn't it?
