It certainly isnt needed for the home plate umpire to determine balls and strikes ...

Anything within a foot of home plate is good enough it seems.

I don't so much have a problem with the wide strike zone , it's consistent atleast...I'd be TomGlavining the outer edge to death, if I could pitch, I was wild though.

something a little more within reason..

some of the calls today have been shocking.

i realize they want to move the game along , but come on...

I missed today's game as Comcast decided to take the day off here the past 4 hours...I noticed the wide zone though pretty much every game....was it that much worse today?

well they should just come and say if the ball makes it all the way to the catcher in the air , its a strike.

Its consistent with the no lead-off until pitch crosses the plate, no stealing etc., makes the game a little more even in this regard.

was the ump calling it the same way for both teams?

Yes. JMO, but I watched most of the game and while the strike zone was generous, it was called the same. And when I say generous, I mean anything that went over the batter's box chalk was a strike (and at least a couple that were actually inside the box).
