who would you take? both teams have played some pretty damn good baseball relative to expectations this year. and both have the chance to do some major damage to divisional teams in the playoff race. the records are damn near idential. i'm really interested in hearing some thoughts here. while certain teams have already packed it in for the season these two overachievers are playing hard as shit. im impressed.

so 7-gm series. who wins?

game one: brian bannister vs. shawn hill
game two: gil meche vs. mike bacsik
game three: zack grienke vs. tim redding
game four: kyle davies vs. joel hanrahan

starting pitching favors kansas city
bullpen favors washington
power favors washington
defense probably favors kansas city
both teams have a decent home field

In most matchups of AL vs NL ... AL wins

On the other hand, give the Nats a legitimate closer and they have a shot.

don't know if defense really favors KC, Kearns is better than average in right, Logan is really going to become a damn good defensive center fielder, Zimmerman already one of the top 3 defensive 3rd basemen in baseball, Schneider can't hit but he's great behind the plate.

Greinke in starting rotation would be big, he's looked good out of the 'pen and if it transferred to a starting role it'd be a boost. Throw Bergmann in there for the Nats instead of Hanrahan possibly.

KC better on the road so maybe they'd have the edge. Nats have endured some long losing streaks and have still played much better than expectations. I'm proud of them speaking as a huge Nats fan.

its probably fair to say the defenses are a tossup. quantitatively, kc appears to be better. qualitatively, you can make a good case for it being at least dead even.

despite kansas city's bullpen doing a pretty good job lately, id still feel far more comfortable turning the game over to rausch, rivera, and cordero. they're not lockdown guys, but they are better than the stopgaps the royals have right now. washington at least has proven guys.

IMHO, Bannister & Meche are better than anything the Nat`s have. Nice hypothetical tho. I like stuff like this. Disregard injuries, better all round player, JR or A Rod.

Good thread. Yea, would probably give the edge in the pen to Washington right now. Although Riske and Soria can be pretty tough. Two months ago, when the pen included Dottel and Greinke, I'd have to give the edge to Royals.

Recent talk around here is how the Royals need to pick up an impact bat, corner outfielder for next year. Some are suggesting that the Royals cannot keep both Gathright and DeJesus, as they are too similar in style. Tough choice for me, but I have to lean to keeping Gathright.

Headed to the game tonight to watch Greinke v. Miller. Should be a good one, although Greinke will be on a pretty limited pitch count.
