Unreal, I was thinking about starting a similar thread (probably wouldn't have spelled sciatic right though).

Exact same problem. Flared up about 4 days ago, has gotten worse each day. Starts in the lower back for me on my left side and shoots down my left leg at times. Painful and real fucking annoying. I've taken some weak pain pills the last 2 days, but doesn't seem to do much good.

Do you keep your wallet in your back pocket when you drive so that you're sitting on it for extended periods of time? If so, stop.

Though alot may argue this, I would look into a chiropractor. Research and look for a referal.

I have a chiropractor (who I havent had to go to in 5 year, knock on wood) that I have refered about 5-10 people thru the years and EVERYONE thanked me after they went. I would say most did not want to go and fought and argued with me, making the same quote "it's just a pulled muscle."

Like I said alot of people will 2nd guess this but I swear by one. I know many people who were in tears from the pain, who went this route and were 100% fine 2 days later.

Nothing worse than back pain. It can make you feel 80 years old. Good luck!!!

I would definitly go to a chiro. However, I can tell you his treatment and you can have someone help you out and give you a treatment.

Lay on your side with your lower leg and arm straight like an arrow. Have the person take you upper knee and bend it towards your chest. He then puts his knee against it to hold it in place. He then takes your upper shoulder and moves it back towards the ground. You should feel a little "crack". You then roll over to the other side and do the same thing. This should give you instant relieve.

You should also stand against a wall every now and then and raise your leg in the air. You repeat this about ten times and then do the same thing with the other leg. This exercise will make sure your sciatica doesn't come back.

One thing you shouldn't do is go to a doctor. He will shoot you up with cortisone to relieve the swelling an inflammation. That doesn't get rid of the thing that's causing the problem in the first place and cortisone doesn't leave the body. an adjustment is the only thing that will relieve the pain almost immediately.

I went to a chiro for a couple years back in the early 90s and it helped a bit. One thing I learned to do is taking two tennis balls and putting them in a sock, then you lay down on your back with the tennis balls underneath your lower back with each ball on either side of your spine. Then you just kinda roll up and down on the tennis balls, making sure the tennis balls stay on either side of your spine. Sort of like the massage machine they had at the chiro office. It didn't work all the time, but almost always there was a reduction of pain. Sometimes the pain was completely gone when I apparently hit the right spot. I don't have the sciatica problems I used to have because I think of the office visits and being more conscious of not putting any strain on my lower back and always wearing a belt when I workout. But whenever I do get a sciatica flare-up, I'll do the tennis ball massage. Alot cheaper the chiro office.

World....I have always been the biggest supporters of chiropractor, and still do believe in them. But for all the yearss I ahve been going (20 ) and all different ones I have seen ( 3 or 4), I still would have chronic back pain.

Then someone gave me the book "Healing Back Pain" by John E Sarno. I never even finished the book, and my back pain was gone. Basically, it tlaks about the mental stress that is casuing back pain, neck pain, sciatica, etc....

My back pain still come onces and again, but only for an hour at most.

I moved a Pepsi cooler up my deck 2 days ago, and fuck it hurt. But then I realized that that was only a trigger and should have nothing to do with it, and in 20 minutes, the pain was gone. (Usually I would have been crooked, ,yes crooked, for about 2 to three days.

This all sounds like bullshit and kookkie, wacky b.s. , but believe me. Read the book and see what happens. I didn't believe it at 1st either, but after 20 years of chiropractor, massages (they still feel good) and even acupuncute,, one simple 200 page book changed my life (as far as back pain goes)

This is really a quick summary ( I hate typing) but if i didn't explain it well enuf or you have a question, please ask.

I have been dealing with my sciatic nerve for about 3 months now.. i havent seeked any treatment.. i basically have done nothing to help it get better.. the first week was brutal.. i was basical bed ridden. i was basically paralyzed from it. it has gotten less painful over time, but it is definitely still bothering me. ive read that in time it heals itself and will slip back into place but i dont know, people have been telling me to goto a chiropractor, but i havent.. its terrible, I cant even sit in a normal position.. I have to sit leaning on my right side, and i cant lay flat on my back or when i try to get up, the pain will be unreal. this has been torture. and im a moron for not seeking treatment.

Arthur, I have never had sciatic pain, but I have had unbearable back pain. I literally was croooked like the leanind tower of "pizza"
Horrendous pain. Hurt to walk. Hurt to sit. NO way of putting my socks on. Couldn't wipe my ass!!!!!! Just f'ed me up altogether.

Last time it happened, my chiro was out of town. It was a Saturday and my "back up" Chiro didn't have office hours.

I lied on my hammock and began reading the book I mentioned above.

Couple hours later I got out of the hammock and felt better. A little more straight.
By the morning I was back to normal. Amazing!!!!

The mind is so freaking powerful, you just can't believe it.
(THe toughest part was admitting I was responsible for the pain.)(Thats not a great way to phrase it, but it's the best i could right now)

Read it. It changed me and my back.

Harry. you sound very much like my dad, he preaches the same thing.. he really believes all bank pain is mostly mental, and that being in the right frame of mind will heal it.. Im starting to buy into it a little, he told me a quick story of a doctor who talked of 2 patients... one guy, was in greta shape, spine, vertebrates looked perfect, nothing out of alignment.. but he had terrible back pain... and another guy who had slipped disks, bulging disks, vertebrates out of place etc.. and no back pain what so ever.. things that make you go hmm i guess

I've been to med school (and even graduated) and the last thing I would do is go to a chiropractor. I have seen too many people that were seriously injured by a chiropractor to be able to recommend that.

Most people can solve their sciatic nerve problems by being more mobile. However, if your problem is caused by a pelvis fracture or trauma to the groin area you may need other treatment. Many people have sciatic nerve problems from sitting too long (i.e. reading therx for too long).

Moved my wallet from back pocket to front pocket. Helped tons. Hang from a chin up bar so your feet don't touch the ground. Let out all the air from your lungs. Lay on the floor and do that stretching exercise noted above where you lay on your sides and pull up one leg. If you sit at a desk all day, look to improve your posture. Exercise more. Get a nice firm mattress.

ONCE YOU GET BETTER!

The ticket here is after all the tests. X-Ray, Cat, Mri etc.
if not chronic ....what are you going to do!

Do nothing and it will most likely go away, but come back.
Treatment WILL shorten the ailment, but will come back.
UNLESS!

You remember the PAIN and exercise. (Variety)

If old or young I recommend trying Deep Water AquaAerobics, especially while still recovering.

With a float belt in a deep pool you do what they do in the gym. NO gravity.

thanks for all the great info and replys..

some history :

about 1 year ago at 8:30 in the morning i bent over to tie my shoes and something went wrong in my lower back. i went to the floor and couldnt get up for about 5 minutes.

finally got up and drove my kid to school. it hurt real bad getting in and out of the car.

laid up for 3 or 4 days. started stretching it by laying on my back and taking a towel, rolling it up, throwing it around my feet and pulling my legs back as far as i could. felt like it opened my lower back up.

after about 1 month i felt fine.

for about the last 6 months i have been playing tennis a lot.. like 5 days last week , 5 days the week before.

i've been playing thru the pain mentioned in my first post. somethings got to be out of alignment.

i know i'm not helping matters by playing 1.5 hours of tennis on hard courts so often.

i just turned 45 and am in reasonably good shape.. good enough to run around a tennis court playing singles like i do.

Chronic Back Pain/SCIATIC NERVE PAIN Is TERRIBLE!

I've had lower back pain for years. It started when I was a junior in high school and during basketball practice, I went up to dunk a basketball and had a teammate cut my legs out from under me. I landed on my tailbone, and couldn't feel my legs for 2/3 days. That was close to twenty years ago, and I'm still having trouble. I had knee surgery last October, and after the surgery, my right leg was numb for 3 weeks........The Physical Therapist I was seeing told me that was coming from The Sciatic Nerve In My Back. After many days, and alot of severe streching it got better. From what I know The Sciatic Nerve Runs From The Top of The Neck/Back of The Brain, down the spine, through the inner thigh, through the calves, through the feet, to the toes.

Best Bet....Try a Chiropractor...and after a few days..get a referral to a Physical Therapist. Be Prepared For a Few CT SCANS & Some MRIs!

Wishing You The Best

I'm learning a lot about sciatic nerve pain. The pain is a symptom of another ailment, be it a bulging disc or what I have, periformis syndrome.Actually it sounds worse than it is as it is a muscle strain deep within my left buttock. The pain has been unbearable at times due to muscle spams.Current treatment by my chiropractor is ultrasound.I've had one with three more to go.Just started a muscle relaxer today with significant relief of the pain.
Scheduled for a therapeutic massage on Friday.

It sounds like sciatica, but lower back pain in a relatively young man can also be a sign of testicular cancer. Just make sure you get it checked out properly.

as the guy who started this pain filled thread , i will update my situation.

went to chiropractor . 3 times.

the first time he had me lay on my side and he wrenched my back in a way that took away all the lower back pain i was feeling.

i have been 2 more times that have seemed to be a waste.

cause the lower pain is doing well but now i have an upper right shoulder issue.

he hasnt been able to help that at all.

i am thinking massage for that..

all i can say as a 45 year old is that getting older sucks. if you are in your 30's , start stretching every day.

you must keep your flexability.. if you dont , you will regret it.
