A video of last weekend's fatal train-mini-van crash in Hammond shows the van's driver racing the train before being struck at the railroad crossing, officials said.

Two young sisters were killed in the Saturday morning collision. Their mother, the driver, remains in critical condition, friends said.

The video was captured by several cameras at the Hammond station for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, spokesman John Parsons said. The crash took place near the South Shore Line station, but involved a train traveling on the CSX rail line, he said.

<!-- END rail -->The video shows the mini-van speeding through the station's parking lot before turning into the crossing ahead of the train. But the van is struck by an oncoming train traveling on tracks going in the opposite direction.

The 1999 Mercury Villager had been going southbound on Johnson Avenue toward Hudson Street when it was hit by a westbound freight train, said Police Lt. Mike Jorden.

"It seems apparent from the video what the driver was doing," Jorden said Thursday. "It is still a tragedy, and we hope others can learn from this."

The case is under investigation by Hammond police and a full accident report is expected later today or Friday, he said.

Crystal Bolanos, 11, and Anahi Bolanos, 8, of the 200 block of Hanover Street in Hammond, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Their mother was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Two other children who survived the crash were treated at the University of Chicago Hospitals.

Norma Bazan, owner of a day-care center in East Chicago, said she has cared for the family's children for years. "It was a tragic accident," Bazan said. "She was a very loving mother. She loved her children a lot."

Wow..What a Shame.

the mother should have been airlifted by the helicopter and then dropped to her death.

It looks like, I could be wrong, but it looks like she was trying to beat the one train and probably never saw the other train...tough to see because of the distance.

how is she even in critical condition. It seems like she got the worst of it from where the car has been struck.

Agree that she probably didn't see the other train, but she would have beaten the original train by just a wisker. What could she have been thinking? Why no crossing barriers? Sad deal.

With four kids in the car, odds are pretty good one of the kids had to go wee-wee and Mom didn't want to wait and didn't want to let kid go in parking lot like a man would have done. Just a guess, but all in all, really, really sad, albeit stupid. Mother and family will never recover from this..............guilt will be incredible. I will pray for their peace!

People use bad judgement every day in motor vehicles. This is just another example of using extremely bad judgement. I really think it is too damn
easy to get a driving license in this country. I think each and every person
should be tested about every 5 years and i think the majority of the
tests should be based on a variety of factors including making judgements
in certain situations.

Would making it more difficult to get a license stop something like this from happening? Of course not. I am sure the woman knows the rules she just chose to not obey them

No way she doesn't see both trains coming, she's driving right next to the first train which is the same one that hit her. She did the big loop in the parking lot to gain momentum, otherwise she could have turned a hard right and crossed both tracks in plenty of time without getting hit. Unless it was a suicide attempt I think it's safe to say she's done this before or that she's been with someone else when they did this. Unfortunately this time it all went wrong, and 2 young lives pay the price because of it.
