This guy is won of the best. HE teams play ferocious physical defense and are always solid. They made it to the Super Bowl one year and came very close to beating the Patriots in one playoffs during that ice bowl game in another year. They play the Patriots tough because they play the game the right way...PHYSICAL AND TOUGH. Any other way is unlikely to work long term. Now he has Vince Young and is up to his old tricks....just winning and playing good football. You do not hear his name among the elite coaches but I think he clearly is.

absolutely!

It was hard to believe they almost canned him...one of the very best coaches, hands down....glad he made it through , Vince Young's quick start may have saved Fisher's job.

I do not know Fish but curious too.

Journey, he was in trouble there and it can happy easily in the NFL. You can mess up especially with the salary cap. There are so many lousy coaches when you have a good one you must keep him. I mean when Norv Turner keeps getting hired as a head coach you now there are not that many good ones. Turner is like DOn Zimmer in baseballl...great on your team but not as the head guy. Fisher is still so young too....

Totally concur. Fisher would get more acknowledgment if he coached in a bigger market.Titans could be a spoiler if they make the playoffs but they play in the AFC.

What Fisher is doing with a team with as little talent as the Titans is simply amazing. Also, gotta give Norm Chow some credit in that Jaguars win. I don't know what they saw or how they did it, but they rushed for 282 on one of the best rush defenses in the game and mostly up the middle on two of the best DT's in the game. However, when they play a team with a good defensive coordinator that offense will get shut down as VY is still not a very accurate passer.

Conversely, Del Rio and staff are total dogshit. This is one of the most talented rosters in the NFL and with or without Scobee they never should've lost at home to the Titans. If they miss the playoffs in back to back years with a roster that is probably Top 5 or 6 in terms of talent in the NFL that will be shocking

I thought the same thing on VY. You CANNOT let him beat you with his legs yet he ran right up the middle, predictably, for TD's yesterday. I mean you have to stop that and jacks was asleep and that means coaching.

I am by far one of the biggest titans fan on this board..ONe of the few who was dancing the....:dancefool when news broke that leftwich had been canned at jacksonville and replaced by Garrard, and called the titans to win an extra game this year due to that fact alone and it turns out that the extra game might very have been the very tough road game at jacksonville...

Why am i buttering my image up before i get into the guts of my response? Well because i am one of the few titans fans who was fed up with Jeff Fisher until he friggin changed his leopard spots in week one of the regular having hoodwinked us true football fans through out preseason)

Yes.. i was looking forward to seeing Fisher let go at the end of the year as the team had not extended his contract which is in its last year.

I know you are by now thinking that i am just a simple dope among the few who are too ready to call for coaches head at the drop of a hat..(not true considering i have had his back ever since the titans moved to nashville)

I have looked at his body of work and figured, that the last four years of his tenure were needlessly painful unproductive years because of fishers unwillingness to adjust his style of football to match his personnel.

Sure this win against the jaguars seems like it was Jeff fisher returning to ole school ball....THAT IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE!!!!

/let me explain before you go grabbing for my throat.

That game was nothing at all like what jeff fisher has called all his life in
nashville. Jeff fisher normally has had that bland old boring single tail back look, run in between the tackles all friggin day long. Running backs were not allowed to cut back or bounce anything to the outside. You were expected to run the ball right up the middle all day, and make sure you hit the hole when it opens then run through and deliver a blow to the db you meet in the secondary.. This was the culture of football that had Eddie george carry the titans on his back until they broke him down like an old horse. Granted he had a long and productive career, he could have given us two or 3 more years and retired a titan had fisher simply adjusted his running scheme that called for the running back to be used like a battering ram all day long, wear out defenses and kick the winning field goal with
3 seconds left on the clock. This is the reason we have been going through running backs like water and they have been injured ala
Chris brown, the same guy we pretty much let go and resigned when no other team would take him. Every one always bitched about how he was always injured, but any running back of his size and stature, if forced to play the old style fisher football would be often injured. (and yes Eddie george was a different animal because he was uniquely well built and his body could with stand such heavy pounding.)
And worse for Chris brown particularly was his upright running style that meant that hits on his body were doubly more effective in battering his body and rendering him useless half way throught the season
.There are but a few backs in the league built to handle such pounding. Chris brown has always had such tremendous ability, all he needed was a change in the running scheme that was killing running backs in nashville.

And thank all that his holy as far as football goes, Fisher has at last changed his philosophy on the game. and installed a new zone blocking scheme that has allowed our running backs to flourish in the most pleasantly suprising way.. But make no mistake about it, this is not vintage jeff fisher!!!

Fisher was faced with the distinct possibility that he would be let go when his contract talks bogged, down and he did what he had to do to save his job. But dont make the mistake of saying he is going back to his old ways.
And dont assume he isnt genuinely concerned about being fired. Truth be told, he has one of the best jobs in the league, with some of the most patient "big market" fans..(yes i said big market because titans are one of the few teams to actually sell out all their home games like 5or 6 years in a row even with back to back losing seasons) He doesnt have to put up with the immense pressures half the coaches around the league deal with on a daily basis. Even the Pacman saga was nothing compared to say the drama TO faced in dallas last year with helicopters circling his home etc.)

All in all Fisher is a good coach but his lack of flexibility has cost the titans in the past. And may be the benching of Chris brown has turned out to be a blessing in disguise but lets not get carried away with the cheerleading.

Ps...I have more opinions on other issues regarding other facets of the team aside from the running game, like vince young's stalling development of his passing game, and defensive secondary woes but i cant type out such a long argument.

Also i am not sandbagging my own team, but they will get carved up for about 300 yards in the air by peyton manning next sunday.. (that does not mean they will consequently lose the game)

I gotta correct you on one thing..Vy run for only one td. He had another great opportunity to run for another on like 3rd and goal about 5 or 6 yards to go but he opted to pass and the ball fell incomplete.

Also, the jaguars did a good job in stiffling VY and confusing him alot. He did throw and INT and had an almost costly fumble that the titans recovered. He only run for 22 yards and i dont recall him running for a a first down. (he may have had may be one run for a first down but i dont recall seeing it)

What VY did very very well was control the mlb. (well he along with Norm chow had plays that pretty much made the line backers almost non existent all day.

They were all keyed in on Vy and he controlled them and moved them where he wanted them only to hand the ball off to Lendale White and Chris brown for huge yardage. They were forced to account for him and every time they thought he was gonna run, the ball was handed to a running back for cut back run that simply gushed the jaguars

Some good info. THanks. Yeah there are so many factors to determine how good a coach is. One of them is talent. I Mean if a team has the talent they make the coach look good. If not he is lousy. Over time though the good coaches shine. I hear you on the stubborness. I like him a lot though but hear you.

Having watched him in the old division for many years, I cant stand him. However, he is one hell of a coach. Respect the shit out of the guy & he seems to have tuned it down a bit in his old age.

I think he's probably the best coach in the NFL. He does the a lot with less than stellar talent.

I like Jeff Fisher and honestly feel he is an excellent coach. However he has had the luxuary of coaching in one of the smallest markets in the league for 13 years and has only managed to win his conference once although he lost a heart breaker to the Rams in the Super Bowl that year.

He has had Steve McNair and Eddie George to ride for years and now has Vince Young. Fisher knows how to use exceptional players like these but put him in a major market like Wahington, Dallas, either New York team, New England, Chicago and even Oakland and he would have been history long ago.

Of course he would have had other chances at other cities if that had happened and who knows what he could do with a talented roster like the ones in cities like San Diego, Denver or even Baltimore.

Who would you rather have as your head coach if they were the only two available -- Jeff Fisher or Bill Cowher?

Cowher and it is a no brainer. Cowher had been very very successful for years and most of the time with a garbage or mediocre QB. He lost many big free agents as well but always bounced back with a solid team and first places finishes and Super Bowl victories etc etc. Cowher has to be considered one of the very best (though head to head with Belichick he is not close but lets leave this for another day). You brought out some good points on Fisher but his teams have always played tough and they gave the pats a REAL run for their money in the playoffs one year when we won it all. Tenn is on their way to being a good team again and they were pretty bad not too long ago. Nice job by that coach and organization. I also think they play the game the way it should be played....tough and physical.
