I need to buy a laptop for my mom for her birthday this weekend...
and I know a lot of you guys know about computers
and I need your help.

whats the best deal on a laptop for $799 or less?
Is there any way to get coupons that can save me money
for stores like compusa or best buy?

I saw a sony vaio N365E/B on the comp usa website for $599 after rebates...
but I'm not sure how good a processor it has.

Please help!
Thanks -Pig

Pig, that's actually a hell of a deal. I'm a big fan of Vaio's.

Ideally it will have XP-preferably Pro, and you'll most likely have to upgrade the memory to 1 or 1.5gb. You should still be at or below your #.

Sony is OK, rebates are hit or miss, though.

No, Dells are crap-as is their CS if you are ever unfortunate enough to have to deal with it.

Really???? Wow I just ordered one. Couldve had a Sony for the same price. Any particular reason why Dells are crap besided CS?

Cheap junk that is considered "consumer grade". No one with half a brain will touch their servers, but that doesn't mean that some of their laptops are half decent.

My limited experience with Dell laptops has been shitty

Speaking about Dell laptops, those are mostly rebranded Acers or similar crap. The exception is Latitude X1 that was totally different and very good as it was a rebranded Samsung. They had their way with it to fit into their Latitude line and the result is Latitude 420 that is still decent machine.

Have you done a research before ordering, who manufactures it for Dell? As a rule of thumb, Sony is better.

Think about weight, screen size, battery life and how much you want to spend. Since you are looking at machines that are on sale then likely you should go with a least expensive Compaq.

so is it in your opinion that Compaq's are superior to Sony's, HP's, etc.?

Data where do you stand on Acer? I have had a Vaio for going on three years now without a single issue... Battery life is brutal but it was not when I bought it and it was fine for the first couple of years...

IMO if you are looking for a machine that will last that you can get for a good price Acer is the choice w/o a doubt.

I just bought my mother in law one for $400 and it had everything a guy/gal would want as far as surfing the net and doing basic operations.

They achieve low prices through very low quality. They are the worst of major brands.

Vaio? That is Sony's brand.

You are very lucky if it lasts, generally speaking, this is -EV play.

Men throughout the world salut you!
