Problem is 500 HR has always been automatic, when I think back to his career, which seems to have flown by, I don't think of greatness at all really.

Kurkjen said this morning he would vote for him 1st ballot. One stat that does stand out... he has the 4th lowest at bats for players in the 500 homer club (assuming he gets it).

He could also still hit 600, I say he is in, but I understand the arguement against.

Another case of a great player trying to crack the Hall of Famer lineup...just a tad short in my opinon and I am a Thome fan....

He has some rediculous stats, and he's only 36 or 37. Super good character, friendly to the media. We had this debate in the baseball thread. Whether you think he should be or shouldn't be, he will be, deservedly so to when you line up his numbers to other big bashers.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)—Chicago White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome has hit his 512th homer, tying him with Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 19th place on the career list.
Thome’s fifth homer of the season came in the first inning of Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay.

got this off the net....

The case against:
--Less than 2000 career hits is VERY underwhelming. Edgar Renteria has more hits than Jim Thome.
--No MVP awards, only one top five finish (fourth in 2003).
--Third on the all-time strikeout list.
--No rings in two World Series appearances...a career .229 post season batting average. Heck...he wasn’t even the best player on the Indians during his days in Cleveland.
--They will be FAR too many more qualified first time inductees by the time Thome becomes eligible.

Thome is a no go in my opinion. When I think of Thome I think of a good slugger that is usually all or nothing, but I don't think of a hall of famer.

This is the Bill James qualification list that I am a believer in. Thome has 63 points (50 is a minimum HOFer)

Hall of Fame Career Standards Test

All-Time and Active Leaders
This test gives a score of 50 for an average Hall of Famer, with 100 as the max (note Babe Ruth is over 100 due to my simplistic addition of his pitching and batting values), though mine are lower due to some difference in positional adjustments that I'll explain below. It is used to measure the overall quality of a player's career as opposed to singular brilliance (peak value).
Also, I require a minimum of 20 points in this metric before the value is displayed for a player. Anything below that is meaningless.
This can be found in James's book on p. 174-176. All values are for career marks, and I've required 1000 at bats or 500 IP for the rate stats to kick in.
  • Batting Statistics
  • One point for each 150 hits above 1500, limit 10.
  • One point for each .005 of batting average above .275, limit 9
  • One point for batting over .300
  • One point for each 100 runs over 900, limit 8.
  • One point for scoring more than .500 runs per game.
  • One point for scoring more than .644 runs per game.
  • One point for each 100 rbi's over 800, limit 8.
  • One point for driving in more than .500 runs per game.
  • One point for driving in more than .600 runs per game.
  • One point for each .025 of slugging percentage above .300, limit 10
  • One point for each .010 of on-base percentage above .300, limit 10
  • One point for each 200 home runs.
  • One point if home runs are more than 10% of hits.
  • One point if home runs are more than 20% of hits.
  • One point for each 200 extra base hits over 300, limit 5.
  • One point for each 200 walks over 300, limit 5.
  • One point for each 100 stolen bases, limit 5.
  • James's version: Defensive value: 20 points for catcher, 16 - shortstop, 14 - second base, 13 - third base, 12 - center fielder, 6 - right fielder, 3 - left fielder, 1 - first baseman, 0 - designated hitter

In this March 21, 2010, file photo, Minnesota Twins' Jim Thome watches his RBI single off Tampa Bay Rays' Wade Davis in a spring training baseball game in Fort Myers, Fla. Thome signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal in February to serve as a pinch-hitter and part-time DH for a team that is coming off its fifth AL Central title of the decade. AP PHOTO

MLB Notebook: Thome's new role with Twins

by: Associated Press

Digging his left foot into the back of the batter's box, Jim Thome taps home plate with his bat before pointing that mighty stick toward the center field fence.

Even at 39 years old, Thome still strikes an imposing figure when he comes to the plate.

He is only 36 home runs shy of 600 for his career and has been swinging the bat with plenty of punch in his first spring training with the Twins. But individual numbers don't mean much to Thome these days, which is why one of the most feared sluggers of his era turned down more money, and more guaranteed playing time, to sign with Minnesota in the offseason.

"As you get older, there's more you can do than just going out there and doing it by performance," Thome said. "I think the main thing every day is to be ready, prepare yourself and be ready to play no matter what happens."

Nice list FW. I've never seen that.

I think he's in....however, over the next decade + there are going to be a lot of players w/ ridiculous stats coming up for the ballot.

Look at a guy like Jamie Moyer. He has no shot....unless he can hang on for 4+ seasons and make it to 300 wins.....

VD,

If LT wants to learn anything about baseball he'll come talk to me. There is only ONE thing he knows....and that's handicapping COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

But, since you are so sure about Thome, please do explain to all of us...morons...who aren't as knowledgeable as you why he won't get in? Is it the nearly 600 HR's? Is that what will keep him out? Please....I'm anxious to know.....
