We have two relatively dissimilar kinds of people at the #1 spot, but they live in the same food supply area...

1 United States 30.6
2 Mexico 24.2

I bet they put some additive shit in North American food that makes people blow up like a balloon.

European ban on bovine growth hormones should continue

Sex hormones, including testosterone and 5 others, increase cattle's weight by about 10%, making North American meat cheaper to produce.

How does Mexico make #2? I've never been there, but from all accounts, the place is very poor ... you'd think it'd be hard to have a populace of fat bastards in a poor country.

I think Mexicans tend to have really slow metabolisms for some reason. They also tend to be short. I dunno, thats what I think. Harder for them to burn a calorie.

Damn, it's gotta be the language!

If you speak English, you're fat.

And the sheep around here actually think it's diet and exercise.

Wake up.

Xpanda, try eating strictly mexican food for one month and see how much weight you gain. The foods they eat are loaded with fat.

Mexicans also eat a lot of beans, no? If I added beans to my daily diet, I'd be unable to gain a pound (now there's a thought!)

Seriously, tho... I realise that poor Americans tend to be obese, but a poor Mexican person has a problem getting food at all, not just healthy foods.

XPANDA notes: I realise that poor Americans tend to be obese, but a poor Mexican person has a problem getting food at all, not just healthy foods.

SH: Based on what I've observed among the Mexican-American community and what they've shared with me about life back home, the core diets are low cost, a lot of homegrown fruits and vegetables and of course, beef, beans and bread products.

The food is prepared communally not just among a single family, but often among several neighboring homes.

Not much, if any, goes to waste.

One does not have to be rich to eat well.

One does need to have more $$ if they want to buy mostly processed and prepackaged foods, (especially frozen) and if they want to pay others to prepare and/or serve the food to them. (restaurants etc).

I believe most mainstream Americans, if forced to cut back on the amount of food they purchase (either for home or restaurant) would eat just fine and spend a lot less.

Of course, we're free to do otherwise and many do.

My wife and I have gone through some stretches where we discard $50 or more of food a week for several weeks at a time when we overbuy at restaruants (we eat out 3 to 4 times a week). It takes us paying closer attention to not waste both the food and of course the $$$ we pay for it.

That challenge is likely not often faced by a guy with a $200 a week income.

Barman you would probably be correct in the mexico communal sharing in rural or urban areasfor the poor, so 75%

I lived in colombia for 5 years and you can eat like a king, at a restaurant

not the fanciest in Bogota they didnt serve hamburgers or sushi :)

but steak rice beans, avocado, soup, fresh pork rind, fried plantains, fresh juice

all for 4 $

and your right that would be for the rich

I reckon that those crappy fizzy drinks put a lot of weight on people, it's been a big growth sector in recent years too.

That, and a general lack of basic physical effort.

There's no alchohol involved, but people wind up like those fat beer drinkers you see in pubs.

does being fat mean being dumb because it seems to go hand in hand in the U.S.
