Since we had a thread criticizing Andy reid and Rich Brooks, I have a quiz for the coaches on this forum.
********************************
Kansas State was playing Nebraska about 10 years ago. The Wildcats were favored by 9.5. The Wildcats are up by 3 points with 30 seconds to go. They score a TD and are now up by 9 ... BILL SNYDER HAS KANSAS STATE TAKE A KNEE ON THE EXTRA POINT!!!!!!!!

QUIZ: Convince me that someone in the Snyder family didn't have money on Nebraska +9.5.

Yeah ... good answer ... excpet Nebraska wouldn't need to onsides kick ... they would be receiving.

Snyder said the ONLY way to lose was to have the 2 point conversion blocked and run back ... and then have Nebraska run back the kick-off for a TD ... they wouldn't even need the 2-point conversion.

If he takes a knee, Nebraska cannot win.

unless they return the kick for a TD, then recover an onsides kick and score again.

but yes, taking a knee was a smart thing to do.

nothing will change your mind, but the play makes complete sense. If he either goes for 2 or kicks the XP it could be blocked, picked or fumbled and returned for 2, thus making it a 7 point game with Nebraska getting the ball. This way the game remains at 9 and is completely out of reach (barring a KOR TD, recovered onsides and TD/FG following the recovery). It is actually a genius move.

no, they scored and went up by 10 and the line was -10 1/2 and they took a knee as to not go up by 11, i remember it VERY well, i remember they fumble they scored on, ripped the QB's helment off with a facemask that wasn't called...why they took a knee though was beyind explination, there was no chance to lose at that point. the game was Nov 14th 1998, Classic game too.

I remember the game very, very well. There was still time on the clock--maybe 2 to 4 seconds. I believe that the QB panicked and thought that he could run the remaining couple of seconds off the clock by falling on the ball, but he forgot that the PAT is untimed. The clock does not run.

If memory serves, there was a significant sway of emotion in this game. Nebraska was up, then K-State scored quickly--and apparently covered--before screwing up the PAT. The guy I was with had a ton on K-State and I thought he was going to die. Literally. I have never seen a worse beat in football.

i wish i couild find the article, but i am almost sure it was fromthe LVSN.com and they talked about people just going wild in the sportsbooks in vegas that day as it was the biggest game, ETC...that ending was incredible, no calls on face masks where the guys head was aboout ripped off, diving in for a TD from 5+ yards out, NOT kicking the PAT, just insane.

This one is up there with OSU missing an XP against ASU in the Rose Bowl to lose by 1/2 point (I was in a Vegas sportsbook during this game, second craziest scene I have witnessed as a result of a bad beat) and ASU (same year) covering 9.5 in OT against USC (the craziest scene, especially since it was 4th down and the USC QB was clearly down before fumbling).

Missing an XP is one thing ... taking a knee is in a different league .... I have NEVER NEVER in my life seen a team take a knee on an extra point ... especially when you are right at the spread ... and then someone tries to convince me that it was the right thing to do?

They must've had some bad lines in Vegas that day as I remember my local having that game at 1.5 I think. I looked it up on the Gold Sheet's site and they show -2.5 as the spread. I do remember how crazy the finish was as the Snake and Germaine both led their teams to thrillling scores. Maybe it had something to do with a halftime line?

Maybe it was o/u? I forget, it has been a while now. I didn't bet the game but remember half the place going crazy after the TD and then the other half going nuts after the missed XP.
