that might be an extra start for zambo before the end of the season and fighting for your playoff chances, u go with your best pitchers to try and get ya there... its about as important as a game 7

I guess some older managers have a momentary lapse in memory, forgetting that today's athletes aren't outrageously coddled and generally fucking p ussies.

In theory it seems like a pretty good idea. You would think your Peavys and Zambranos even at 70% are better then some brutal 5th starter. It just hasn't worked out that way in the last decade or so. No matter how dominant the pitcher is they seem to stink it up on three days rest. It has been a consistant trend.

Just did not seem necessary...didn't he pitch on short rest last week as well?

I recall hearing a few years ago that in the playoffs, 3 day rest pitchers were something like 1-19 going back the last 10 years or so. It was such an outragous number you would think well-schooled coaches would steer clear of such a strategy. If anybody has the actual numbers on this please post.

The only reason Sheets was pitching on three days rest was that he went just three innings in his last start.
As a Brewer fan, I hope the Cubs pitch Zambrano on two days rest the remainder of the season. He's a $90 million choke artist.

its really not silly at all. it is the only time it makes sense. let me give you an example as you seem a little slow:

game 7 of the world series. 6-6 tie game in the 5th inning. the starter has thrown 105 pitches and is clearly done. the bullpen is gassed because its late october and everyone is overworked. you dont want to use your closer until the 8th or 9th. you bring back your ace on 3 days rest to get some outs and get the game to the closer. he is your best option and you hope that the adrenaline kicks in and he performs.

understand?

Bob Gibson could still pitch on 3 days rest...Orel Hershiser, Wilbur Wood, Sam McDowell, Nolan Ryan throwing 98 in the 8th at age 43...how did these guys do it and today we can't get a complete game from an entire staff ? Atlanta just got their first complete game of the year this week...the best pitcher in baseball (Santana) is usually gone by the 7th and sometimes the 6th.

Not that it's anything manager Bobby Cox would consider in the regular season, but RHP John Smoltz would prefer to pitch on three days' rest for the remainder of 2007 _ and next year, too. The 1996 NL Cy Young winner, who turned 40 in May and has undergone multiple arm injuries in his career, said doing so would keep him fresh between starts and not tax the bullpen. ``You just can't go as long,'' Smoltz said. ``You can't go nine innings. I guarantee I could do it over the course of the season. Six and seven (innings).'' Replied Cox: ``Of course I'm not going to let him do it, but that's what he wants to do. He's in great shape. He's had a marvelous year this year and not a lot of run support. We look for forward to John next year winning his 20 (games).'

Yeah I understand simpleton.
You just expressed it wrong thats all.
You worded it like they were starting the game.
Either way moron there is nothing wrong with starting on 3 days anywhere.
They use to do it all the time.
Just because these clowns follow everyone the same doesnt mean it cant happen.
For example Larussa uses Eckersley only for the 9th all of a sudden every team must do this what a joke.
Do you think there is some magic that happens if they wait 1 more day to pitch?
Give it a break!!
