to win the american league pennant as of 5 minutes ago on monday night. pretty bizarre.

new york +185
boston +225
anaheim +265
cleveland +365

american league is an absolute tossup. crazy to think that the team that could have home field throughout is considered the longshot.

one thing i will say is that sabathia's #s in his career are piss poor vs the yankees. something like 1-7 vs new york. but the yanks didnt see him this year so not sure how much weight those numbers carry, esp since sabathia is cy young caliber right now. cleveland's 1/2 is better than anyone in baseball right now.

... but they easily have the weakest closer of the contenders and that is scary.

personally, id have anaheim as the favorite in the american league. they are the best team in baseball right now. yet they dont get any respect.

all in all, any of the 4 teams in the AL could win the world series. then again, any of the 4 could get bounced in the 1st round simply because of how strong (and lopsided relative to the NL) the AL is right now.

I looked at the AL playoff format, and if Cleveland finishes with the best record, I will be jumping on them for ALCS champs. The #1 seed in the AL plays in the series that starts October 8th (wednesday) this series is spread out over 8 days.. meaning CC Sabathia and Fausto Carmona would each pitch 2 games in a 5 game series on REGULAR 4 day rest.

fair warning:

i really think youre right. detroit pretty much went in the tank but if the format hypothetically allowed for them to have 5 teams from each league, then i do agree that the 5 AL teams would be better than anyone from the NL. its not like im one of those guys who complains about how weak the east is in the nba or stuff like that. im sure the power will even out for next year in mlb and the national league will have some strong teams. but for right now, the american league is far, far better than the national league in '07 and its a shame that two world series caliber teams will be eliminated in the first round in the AL.
