Watching this Vick espn show made me think why do we think of people as heroes.

No athlete is my hero. It is not heroit to play a sport. I am a fan of people in sports.

Even cops and fireman most times are not heros. But they sometimes put themslves in situations to be a hero.

I think the black people that put Vick at the hero status just don't want to feel stupid that they thought he was something he wasn't.

Someone who does something extraordinary under extreme pressure - like a life threatening situation.

Rick Rescorla, the security guard at the WTC who helped evacuate hundreds of people but stayed behind looking for more people and got killed

Aung San Suu Kyi is my hero.

Of course she doesn't get the endorsements the athletes do so you might have to google her.

I stayed up all night to study for a really hard final and got an A. Am I a hero?

Here is a tough question for everybody. Alvin York was considered one of the main heroes during WWI after forcing 40 Germans to surrender to just him. What about a German Nazi during WWII that dedicated his life to the cause because he believed in it. Is he a hero?

Yeah, that does make for a good hero.

Something about mayo and lettuce with roast beef and american cheese. Tough to beat.

Geez Levi you mean you don't think it was above and beyound the call of duty to help people in that situation. Many more ran for the hills that day and I don't blame them either.

CP great post hope all goes as well as possible.

Hero means many things to many people...I believe when you were a kid, having a hero wasn't such a bad thing, but you kind of outgrow it and the term starts to have different connotations....but when you are an adult, you really shouldn't idolize athletes...those who die defending their country are heros to me....CP, lost both my folks to cancer, best wishes to you and yours...

I think that guy was a hero, but his metric was flawed. Doing something extraordinary under duress doesn't make you a hero. You have to unselfishly sacrifice your life to be a hero.

Athletes are not even close to being heroes.

I agree ... but then why do thousands of people go to Hall Of Fame induction ceremonies???

It amazes me that someone would go to Cooperstown because some baseball player is being inducted into the HOF ... there is NO PLAYER that I idolize enough to follow to the HOF induction ceremony
