Ok guys. I'm at work and my wife is unable to give me any good info so heres the question.

Periodically, when starting our 98 GMC Yukon, my wife states there is a loud popping noise, followed by some smoke that will appear from under the hood close to the windshield. The vehicle still starts and while driving no more problems. This does not occur at every start.

Any ideas?

probably a racoon. here's what you do:

1) get 6 iron from golf bag

2) open hood

3) locate racoon

4) start back swing

5) remember to keep left arm straight

6) shift weight and start down swing

7) strike racoon at the base of the neck

8) yell "four"

9) close hood

10) start vehicle

That might explain the popping noise but what about the smoke?

Also, does Walmart have auto repair? I know you frequent them on a regular basis.

BadCo, my wife said the smoke is in front of the drivers side and I believe the distributor is on the passenger side. I'm pretty sure that it has to be electrical though. I guess I need to look under the hood myself. Thanks for the reply

Just spoke with her again and she said whenever it does it it sounds like a small explosion followed by smoke coming from the hood in front of the drivers side. Batteries out. She stated it doesn't do it everytime but frequently enough to worry. If it helps the truck still starts.

I'm thinking engine now, maybe timing. I can't think of anything that would produce that sound. I'll stop the Auto Zone and use their free whatever you call it and see if any error codes come up. Thanks everyone, except Blue.
