If there are 3 teams tied for the NL wild card, is there still some sort of playoff or is it decided by some sort of formula? If the Rockies win out, and the Mets and Phils win Sunday while SD loses, there will be 4 teams with identical records. I would assume then that the Mets and Phils play 1 game for the NL east but does anyone know how the Wild Card would be determined?

I keep trying to go over the possibilites in my head too, but honestly have no idea how it works...I will be waiting for "baseball tonignt" to explain this monstrosity. I did however hear one of the Fox reporters say that this is the tightest ending to a season in the history of the playoffs, since the wild card was conceived. Go Phillies!!

I'll look for it on B-ball tonight. What happened to the Phils today? I bet them on the RL and am thinking about doing the same on Sunday. Like the avatar.

Tiebreaker Scenarios

If a tiebreaker game is necessary for a one-game playoff to resolve division ties, coin flips were held to determine the host team. In the NL West, the Diamondbacks would host the Padres, Dodgers or Rockies (if necessary). In the NL Central, the Cubs would host the Brewers, the Brewers would host the Cardinals, and the Cardinals would host the Cubs. (if necessary). In the event there is a tie in the NL East only, the Phillies would host the Mets.

If there's a four-way tie among the Mets, Phillies, D-Backs and Padres then the Phillies would host the Mets to determine the NL East champ and the Diamondbacks would host the Padres to determine the NL West champions. The two losing teams would play Tuesday, Oct. 2 to decide the Wild Card. The Phillies or Mets would host the Diamondbacks; the Padres would either host the Phillies or travel to New York; the Rockies would host either way.

Thanks but I'm wondering what happens if the Pads,Rocks, Mets and Phila are all tied. In that case Az wins the west and Mets/Phils play 1 game for the east, but who gets the wild card. I'm guessing its a formula as can't really see how else a 3 team tie would be handled.

Mets @ Phills, Monday...winner is NL East Champ

Loser of ^^^^^ hosts San Diego, Tuesdays...loser eliminated

Winner of^^^^^ hosts Colorado, Wednesday...loser elminated

Thanks for the info. I'm planning on going to the playoff games in AZ if the Cubs play the D-backs. Need to have Az win tommorow to make sure this happens. If all the possible games above are played, NL playoffs wouldn't start until at least Thursday and the Wild Card team could have played up to three straight games. Should be an interesting next few days if this plays out.

If there's a four-way tie among the Mets, Phillies, Rockies and Pads:
• The Mets and Phillies would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ.
• The loser would then enter a three-game mini-tournament for which the Rockies, based on head-to-head records during the regular season, would have the option of trying to win at home and then on the road or just once on the road to advance.
• If the Rockies choose to stay home, their opponent would be determined by the wishes of the team with the second-best combined head-to-head record; it'd be the Phillies if they're involved, but the Padres if the Mets drop into the three-way. That team could choose to play at the Rockies on Tuesday, but it's more likely that it would opt for a single game and travel to play the winner of Tuesday's game on Wednesday.
• If the Rockies opt for the one road game, Tuesday's game would feature New York at San Diego, or San Diego at Philly, with the winner hosting Colorado on Wednesday.
If there's a three-way tie among the Padres, Mets and Phillies: This scenario is possible only if the Padres and Rockies both lose Sunday and the Phillies and Mets both win.
• The Mets and Phillies would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ.
• Monday's losing team would play Tuesday to decide the Wild Card. The Padres would either host the Phils, or travel to New York.
There also remains the possibility that there will be a pair of two-way ties needing to be broken, and they will be created only if the Rockies win Sunday and the Padres lose, while the Mets and Phillies both lose to end their Wild Card bids.
If the Mets and Phillies end up tied in the NL East: You already know this one; they'll play one game in Philly on Monday to crown the champ. And if you're wondering why the Phillies don't just get the division title based on their season-series victory over the Mets, it's because head-to-head tie-breakers are used only when both teams already have a playoff spot secured, and they simply determine seeding. Any regular-season tie that would send the loser home for the year has to be broken on the field.
If the Padres and Rockies finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Colorado.
Admit it: If your favorite team is already out of it, you're pulling for the four-way tie.

Ok, now that should be perfectly clear! :think2:

Thanks. Sounds simple enough. Can't say the wild card hasn't added to the excitement of the playoff chase.

its a shame all these games today are early afternoon with no national coverage and lost in the NFL hoopla.

Interesting decision for Colorado to play the 2 home games or 0ne road game. I think I would hake my chances with the one road game.
