I thought that was a pretty good fight last night, Pavlik is a good story, plus, I hate to say it, but a white american champion, well you know.

So I open up the Las Vegas Review Journal sports page this morning expecting to read about the fight somewhere near the front. I literally had to re-read through the sports page three times to even find an article on the fight, at the very bottom of page 13, underneath a story of Manny Pacquiao preparing for a fight, and Arum and De La Hoya joining forces as promoters.

Now, of course the fight was late (football was still on when the fight ended), and it was in Atlantic City, not in Vegas. But Vegas is still a boxing town, or a perception that it is.

It just kind of struck that there are only a small handful of boxers that can make a front-page story these days.

It is struggling big time. UFC is over taking it with both consistently good fights, frequent UFCs, TUF and quality fights throughout a card (as opposed to one good fight per card with boxing). Plus, the heavyweight division has been non-existent for what? 10 years? For people to be interested in boxing there either has to be an interesting heavyweight division or another division somewhere around the middleweights that is loaded with talent. There haven't been either in like 10 years. Plus, look at the big name fighters, Mayweather and Wright are boring as hell (they are almost too good defensively and technically with no power), Oscar is more interested in his business ventures, Hopkins is 40+, Jones Jr is done, Taylor just got smoked. Not to mention all the shady dudes involved that make everyone dislike them and question the integrity of a decision.
