Other than the state of Virginia, the state of Tennessee saw more battles than any of the other states.

through a customer of mine, i have recently gained knowledge of the whereabouts of an old yankee campsite.......

im going thursday of this week to do some preliminary work on the site..

any idea of things i should be looking for....... about how deep should i expect to find items........

anyone know the value of things such as (belt buckles, bullets, buttons), especially looking for some old payroll's that may have been abondoned in a hurry.......

anyone with any comments on Civil War Relic Hunting or Treasure Hunting in general........ when i retire and sell my business, i plan on becoming an avid treasure hunter, along with betting totals for the bulk of my income..

the site is only 3 miles from my house and about a mile from my business... we are supposed to find an old pine tree overlooking an old bluff...... the site has never been dug before and lore has it, the yanks stayed there for quite some time....... even stealing a cow from a home in the vicinity...

anyone ever been on one of these digs.......... thing about it is, i am probably going alone, since the landowner told me to have at it...... only dig no deeper than 4ft (ha ha) and dont bring any guns on his place......

time to get out my Indiana Jones gear........

what city are you talking about?

I've been to sites in Tennessee, Mississippi, Pensylvania, and Louisiana.

Fort Pillow and Shiloh in Tennessee were interesting to see, but Gettysburg and Vicksburg are truly something.

im about 2 hours from Shiloh........ absolutely no digging on Shiloh, they will jail you for that......

im also in the process of locating the old Andrew Jackson campsite, he came thru here and camped on his way to the battle of New Orleans but ill settle for the yankee sites in the civil war, they had better stuff..

the guy whose place im searching, had a multi great grandfather wounded in the war, for years he had the bugle used in the war...... his mother gave it to his cousin........ i imagine that bugle would be worth a bundle now.......

Brock, im talking about sites not commonly known..... places the yankees stayed for a couple of years around here........

i have an Indian woman, doing some research for me.... she brought me some maps today from the 1830's, showing some old ferry landings in the area........ the old Edmonds plantation.......... now this was about 30yrs prior to the war but id be very interested in looking into that site as well..

SSI-

I'm a big civil war buff and amateur treasure hunter myself. Have the metal detectors, etc. Have found stuff in out of the way places (Virginia mostly)

Wait till you find your first relic. It's like catching a disease. I'm very jealous.

As far as value, etc. make sure you document the site BEFORE you start going at it and back it up with as much written info that you can find. You might want to pick up a copy of the magazine Civil War Times. Available at Borders or other large book stores. Lots of contacts in the back with people buying and selling.

Things are worth MUCH more when you have a good story to go with it.

Good luck and keep us (me) posted.

ps...nothing makes you look more like a shmuck than walking around with a metal detector.

I'd LOVE to take a metal detector aroun Gettysburg, can't even imagine what you would find in/around little round top or the stone wall/high water mark.

Have a feeling the park rangers might not care for it too much LOL

I went with a guy one time to the park here at like 4 am. I guess it is a no no to hunt for the stuff at the park. There was a battle there and they were redoing the golf course we didnt find anything that time but he has found tons of stuff there and all over the US. Lots of buckles and bullets and button. He also has found alot of rare coins to. Stuff that falls off or out of clothing. Kinda of cool but alot of work.

The audio tour is fun and you can drive all over the place checking out all the sites. Don't get me wrong it's a huge historical part of the Commonwealth but it's more fun to do on weekdays IMO (the school kids don't bug me that much.)

You should come around the 4th of July. The re-enactments are a lot of fun.

Privies, there is gold in them thar outhouses. If you know the location of old plantations or substantial homes and can figure out where the privies were located, this is the most likely place to find treasure. All sorts of stuff, in particular bottles and pottery used to get thrown in them. Don't worry, all the doodoo has turned to dirt by now.
