I think he turned down the Orioles job mid-season so he'd have a shot at the Yankee job. The Orioles are not in that bad a shape with a couple of good, young starters and an owner who'll spend money. Why else would he turn down the Baltimore job unless he thought the Yankee's brass was going to let Torre go and they wanted him?
