PATHETIC!!!

Just heard that it is cheaper for someone to fly out of Colorado to Arizona and buy a ticket in Arizona than buy a ticket from a scalper at Colorado.

Personally, I think its awesome.

Now families and others just wanting to see a great game can go without spending their monthly mortgage to do so.

Sporting events have been overpriced for years.

... and the less they buy, the lower the price will be in the future.

I see NO REASON someone should HAVE TO go to a sporting event.

They should should go if they WANT TO ... not because they need to "support the home team" ...

I support the Red Sox ... I just won't pay $300 to show that I do.

You can thank sports agents and the union for that!! Owners own a team to make $, and if they can't get top dollar for ticket prices, then they can't sign Manny, Big Papi, or Beckett to 15million/year deals!

They have $9 seats STILL AVAILBILE for the NLCS. Come on, that is awful.

I hear what you are saying but damn if your town cant get excitied over this than what can they get excitied about.

No excuses in my opinion for this case. This makes them look like a laughingstock as a sports town in the USA.

That is what they want you to think ... in reality, it is just the opposite ...

In Boston, the Celtics were an after-thought after the Sox and the Pats ... totally off the map ... that forced them to make the deals for Garnett and Allen ... they took in the big contracts to get people to come back ...

Yeah, but it still comes back to dollars & cents. Simple math.

If you continue to pay stars huge contracts, and don't raise ticket prices, then your Red Sox would be on the market in no time.

Simple business. If you continue to give your employees raises, then you need to raise your prices to the customers, or figure out how to attract more customers. Unless they add 10k seats to that stadium every year, then raising admission is the only other way to combat more & more being paid to the players.

There is no doubt about it, the ticket prices for just about everything are absolutely outrageous out here.

It's wise to be in good with the boss in the MA corporate world.

Shame on AZ! There is a swimming pool there and it's the NLCS, what more could you want?! ;)

I remember saying last week that it would cost less to fly out to the Angels game 3 and have good seats than it would be to go to Fenway. It's rediculous. Hannah Montana meets Red Sox ticket prices.

That is the big con that the media and the franchises pull ... if you don't attend the event, you're a joke ...

I heard someone from the film industry say they wish they could get sort of marketing lingo for movies too ... something to the effect of "If you can't spend $7 to go watch Heartbreak Kid, ..."

Baseball has lost an entire generation of fans because of their fuck ups ... they think steroids ... and 10 pm starts ... and over-priced tickets ... and 162 game seasons make them money now ... but it loses them fans in the long-term and this is just an example of baseball losing fans ... not a sign of Phoenix being a laughingstock.

Again, you can thank your payroll for that. The D-backs don't have a player even close to $15M/year. I think I heard their ENTIRE payroll is only $30M a year. No wonder they can offer tickets at $9 each!

That's awesome if you are a true fan of the game. I could take my 4 sons to 6 games in AZ for the price of 1 ticket to a game in Boston.

Says it all.

They expect game 2 to sell out, but it doesn't sound like that's the case for game 1.

In Denver, they are having a big crackdown on scalpers-only problem is that the tickets that they confiscate get held as evidence & can't be used.

Most of you guys must be about 5 feet tall, because the point of this thread is going way over your heads.

Baseball tickets aren't expensive. Fenway bleacher seats are $12 or $23. Yankee bleacher tickets day of game are $12. That is what the team receives in revenue. Clearly, there is no difference between the best and worst team's ticket prices at the lower levels. Payrolls have nothing to do with it. In fact, ticket revenue is peanuts compared to concessions and merchandise.

You guys are mad at scalper's prices, which is understandable, but has NOTHING TO DO with the team's revenue.

The fact that Arizona still has tickets available to a playoff game is embarrassing for the team, the city, and the sport of baseball. It won't make ticket prices lower next year.

It really isn't simple business ... raising prices doesn't make you more money ... it lowers demand too ... so it's a bit more complicated (For math majors: revenue curves generally have a negative 2nd derivitive, so there is always a vertex for optimization)

Copied from another site:

A few years ago, Mets tickets went up over 40% over a two year period while payroll went DOWN.

NY Knick payroll is the highest in the league, yet Knick ticket price were lowered two years ago because of bad play by the team

At the same time, NJ Nets ticket prices have climbed by a small percentage even though payroll has remained stable. This is due to the teams' success in making the playoffs. Still, you can argue that Nets' ticket prices are too high as they fail to sell out every night.

and

But don't fool yourself into thinking that George Steinbrenner said, "I'll pay them the higher salaries FIRST and then raise the prices" The higher prices are what lets George pay more for salaries.

So, if the Yankees cut their payroll in half, will your ticket prices go down?

The answer, as we both know, is NO, it'll go up.

Ummm, get a clue. At least research your opinion before you shoot off about it. Ticket prices are 95% of the revenue generated at the stadiums. Take a look at this table. The Yankees have one of the highest average ticket price, and it's just coincedence that they have the highest payroll, too?

Don't try to tell me that you can run a business, by paying employees more & more every year, without having to raise prices somewhere. And since the overwhelming amount of income comes in the form of admission tickets, that's the sensible area to target increases.

As for raising prices, but reducing demand.... Well, you tell me when Yankees or Red Sox have not sold out a playoff game. Raising prices will not reduce demand..... that is... as long as a city demands it's team signs the top talents. You can't bitch, piss & moan about your team not trying to sign the huge names, then also bitch, piss & moan about high ticket prices.

Again, you can thank your payroll for that. The D-backs don't have a player even close to $15M/year. I think I heard their ENTIRE payroll is only $30M a year. No wonder they can offer tickets at $9 each!

I am not picking on you, but this is a misconception ...

Price is a function of demand ... not a function of cost.

They offer $9 tickets because if the price were $15, they would less even less seats.

Think about it from a scalper's point of view ... it is no different for a team.

A team (and a scalper) will charge as much as he can for a ticket.

If he has 20 tickets:

  • He can sell them for $100 each, he makes $2,000 on them.
  • If he tries to sell them for $150, and he ends up selling 10 of them, he makes only $1,500 on them.
  • If he tries to sell them for $200, he might only sell 5 tickets and make only $1,000
It doesn't matter what he paid for the tickets ... he could have paid $5 for the tickets, or $90 for the tickets ... he will charge what he can ... and if he sees people aren't buying the tickets, his price will go down to adjust for the lack of demand.

I have seen scalpers sell tickets at BELOW face value ... why would they do that? Why sell a $100 ticket for $75? It's not that they can afford to sell it $75 ... it's that they can't afford to keep asking for $150 for the tickets, and not sell any tickets at all.

Same for Arizona ... if they double their payroll to $60 million, and next year ask for $18 for the tickets, they will sell even less tickets ...

The bottom line is that the teams will charge what they can ... and they will pressure the public into buying them because it amounts to "supporting the home team" and not selling out is a "disgrace".
