I heard this story once a few years back and always wondered if it was true. Perhaps you guys who work in "Vegas" or those of you "In the Know" can help explain and answer this.

The story went something like the odssmakers post the opening numbers Sunday afternoon (for NCAA/NFLfootball) for the following weeks games, then a certain select group of sharps or high rollers are permitted to place their bets thus pounding the line into shape so Vegas adjusts their odds before releasing the numbers to the public. Is there any truth to this rumor? If not, what exactly transpires out there in order to set the opening numbers.

the stardust use to do what was called a lottery i believe. but it was not weeks in advance it was sunday afternoon for the next weeks games. i hear the cris does the same thing with its openers for its elite platers. most people do not get a real crack at cris' openers. i know for ncaa hoop overnights you usually see a movement of .5-2 pts before you can even get a crack at that number..limits are low in this case as well. usually right around a nickle a pop

All the lotteries in Vegas were on Monday morning..started at the Stardust in the morning and then everyone rushed to the Excalibur...they were the main ones...the CRIS limit is much higher than a nickle...

As far as it goes, that's a fairly decent system for setting the opener. Rather like using a focus group, for all intents and purposes.

Doesn't mean all the lotteries were fair, but the phonebanks outside the Stardust were always busy...

You can get great numbers off of the openers. I did it alot last year.

Thinking about doing it again this year. Looked into it alot the past few weeks. The Greek is CLEARLY the one the one book that has its NFL numbers up first (anywhere from 7:15-8 on Sunday nites).

If you were to take a poll on whose numbers are up first, it probably run 60-40 in CRIS's favor....they take some pride in their slogan where the line originates...and before you start calling me a schill, I did work there for a better part of 7-8 years...:drink:

Okay and I believe you as I had money in all 3 accounts last year and bet them (Greek, Cris, Pinny) and it was really close but I can tell you without a doubt the last 2 Sunday nites I have checked into this, as i may reload at 1 of the 2 and the Greek was way ahead of the other 2.:103631605
