I have been watching some of the top 100/top 50 scary movie countdowns on TV and have been thinking about which movies have scared me the most.
Not much scares me now but a few a handful of movies scared the shit out of me when I was young.

Halloween-only the first one,but mental patient with a mask is very scary when you are a little kid.My first horror movie ever.Scary soundtrack.

Omen-satanic kid,pretty scary

Hellraiser-just the first one.Scary to me because all the suffering and hooks etc is sorta what I envision hell to be like.

Shining-Jack did not scare me but the creepy kid riding his big wheel thru the hallways did.Little kid moaning "red rum",twin girls etc.

When a Stranger calls-remake is a piece of garbage but the first thirty minutes and last 20 minutes of the original includes some of the most underated scary moments ever in a movie.

Most Overated-Elm Street

If by best you mean scariest for me the most frieghtening flick when it first came out was "The Excorcist" (the original). Also very scary the first time around although not really considered as a pure 100% horror movie was the original "Jaws".

I have been a huge horror movie my whole life but am not a slasher movie fan. I like scary movies not just pure blood and gore for 90 minutes.

Another extremely scary movie that imo is not considered a pure horror movie is Alfred Hitchcock's nail biting, nightmare producing "Psycho".

The separate scary movie genre's of horror and thiller sometime are difficult to separate as being one genre or the other.

Nobody ever thinks of this as a scary movie but to me it's Jaws by far.

Wil you make a great point here.

Good example of this to me is 'Seven'. I know its a thriller, but I had a few restless nights after seeing it.

Best horror movie ever Was Silent Night Deadly Night. Just great scenes in the movie and in 1984 parents tried to ban it from the movies and they did. A must watch around Christmas time. Another great horror movie that came out 2 years ago is called Satan's Little Helper. A great movie for Halloween and freaky. Two great movies made on low budgets.

"The Thing" with Kurt Russell is very underrated. "Alien" was a great one too.

Recently, the "Chainsaw" and "Hostel" movies were especially disturbing because the events were so plausible as there were no monsters, just demented sadistic killers.

I'm a big fan of the original horror flicks. I have DVDs of all the old Frankenstein, , Dracula, the Mummy, Werewolf, Creature from the Black Lagoon and King Kong.

If you want to see a great, but lesser known horror flick, try "Freaks" (1932) made by the same director that did Dracula.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Remake)...I thought Bay did a superb job with that film...Good balance of gore and the acting I thought was good as well, nothing looked fake also...

Psycho is a masterpiece bye Hitchcock...What a creative director he was...

Saw has to be on my top List as well...The imagination of James Wan and Leigh Whannell was classic in that film...And to get Tobin Bell to play the role of jigsaw with his great voice for horror...

I am a Big fan of Movies, and I am a even Bigger Fan of Horror !

I have always asked myself the same Question, which is the Best Horror movie of All time ???

Always found it Hard to come up with the answer or Answers..

The Exorcist would have to be on the Very Top of my list, Because if you think about it. We are talking about 1973 when the Movie came out.

Just about Everyone were trying to Stop people from going to see it.
Because of the era that we are talking about. The Church's were up in Arms about this movie and I remember a lot of Protest.

I was about 15 at the time and remembered my parents saying I couldn't go....

I also think that one of the Best, not yet on the list here is Rosemary's Baby which was Before " The Exorcist "

And of Course I can't leave out The Omen which Followed " The Exorcist "

So These would have to be my Top 3
The Halloween series was good, But the Friday the 13th series I thought were all Funny

Original Psycho and When a Stranger Calls (if that is the movie where the guy calls from inside the house) scared the shit out of me when I first saw them. Probably was too young to watch When a Stranger Calls, but man, to this day I remember being scared beyond belief.

Many of the others that are mentioned (Omen, Jaws, 1st Halloween and Exorcist) are great movies but didn't scare me.
