I just got done watching Rome is Burning. Rome was talking to Braylon Edwards. Edwards was talking about how a high school kid in Cleveland was dying and B.E. was his favorite player. His aunt called the Browns during their bye week and I guess he was in the building and he went straight to see the kid in the hospital. He said the kid was so excited to see him.

That is the greatest thing about being a pro athlete. When you have the ability to influence and have such a profound impact on a young person is just awesome. If I went to a hospital to see someone, they could careless, but if you are a Kobe or D Wade, Lebron and you give just a little bit of your time, you can impact people even more than all the money in the world.

agree with the original post in this thread.

Its not possible for us, as adults, to understand what kind of impact seeing their favorite professional athlete has on kids.

I agree. Heard him on Rome's radio show today. Very well spoken, nice guy, and turning into one of the great wide receivers in the game.

Player pays for funeral of teen fan
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Friday, Nov 02, 2007

BEREA: Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards was touched by a visit Oct. 16 at the Cleveland Clinic with 15-year-old Denzel Douglas, who was dying of congestive heart failure.

So touched that Edwards is paying for the Lakewood High School student's funeral.

Douglas' mother, Tara, confirmed that fact Wednesday night after completing arrangements for her son's service, at noon today at Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, and his burial at West Park Cemetery.

''I'm very pleased,'' Tara Douglas said of Edwards' generosity. ''He's a very, very nice guy.''

Edwards said he learned the family was trying to raise money for the funeral and wanted to help.

''No mother should have to worry about how to provide a proper burial for her son,'' Edwards said.

Douglas underwent a heart transplant in July 2006, but his body later rejected the organ.

He idolized Edwards, and his family contacted the Browns, hoping to set up a meeting. Although they couldn't talk during their 30 minutes together — because Douglas was breathing through a tube — Edwards gave Douglas a No. 17 jersey and the game ball he'd been awarded after the Miami Dolphins game.

Douglas passed away Oct. 26.

Tara Douglas said her son will be laid to rest wearing Edwards' jersey and cradling the football in his arm.

''He looks like he's about to score a touchdown,'' she said.
