Does anyone else hate it when you hear that teams HAVE to interview minority coaches?

I mean the league almost insists that you interview and seriously consider minority candidates for head coaches. I think that a team should be able to interview and hire whomever they wish. It isnt like the league is supplementing the future coach's pay.

Today, the Dodgers sent a letter to the league asking them to waive the minority interview rule for them this time so they could hire Joe Torre. If that is who they want, dont make them interview anyone else.

I mean usually teams already know whom they want as their coach, but they end up interviewing other minorities without any consideration of an actual hire.

Ok guys, let the bashing begin! But you KNOW that you feel the exact same wayhola

does not bother me at all. Take a look at the underrepresentated minorities just dont give them an automatic job but force to take a look I think is fine.

No ... what do I care?

That is their problem, not mine.

So the Dodgers are going to have to interview 4 more coaches ... whoopie.

(I do agree that it's a stupid rule and it's a waste of time, though)

As a white male it's easy to pound your fist in anger, but upon reflection a resonable person will come to the conclusion that we do need to do WHAT EVER it takes to make sure people of all races are given a fair shake. If this means forcing someone to interview a dark skined person, then so be it. They can still decline them the job, but at the end of the day you have now elevated the person interviewed, so that the next time a job opening comes up they have a better shot at getting the job.

Common sense.......

NO, IT GETS NAMES OUT THERE for the future. No problem with it. Tired of the retreads in NBA it's out of hand.

I understand why they do it, its a shame they have to do it.

NOW that was exactly what I think. I just dont think that the league should mandate it.

By the way, I love Dennis Green. Although I am not real fond of the Astros hire CECIL COOPER! When is the last time that you have seen AA player on the Astros 25 man roster.

Selig pushed for that hire so much it was rediculous. You should have read the papers around the time that the Astros were interviewing

My first College track coach lost his job because they had to hire a minority coach.

Many of us transferred and got full releases so we wouldn't create a stink

I doubt this.

They do NOT fire a white guy to hire a black guy.

Now if the White guy moves on, they might say the next guy they hire will be black.

your coach wasn't doing a good job. He was let go do to his lack of production.

sorry.

He wasn't exactly fired. He was interim coach for an entire year and then was passed over for the job by a black podunk high school coach in the area. During the entire interviewing process they did not hide the fact too well that they were hiring a minority.

It's racist. Just as requiring companies to interview/hire/promote women is sexist.

It implies that, absent forcing companies to consider us (women and minorities), we would never be able to get a job on our own.

If that isn't insulting, I don't know what is.

Meh, it doesnt bother me at all. I guess for if hiring was on a "level" playing field then the rule wouldnt be in place would it?

I agree with 5team that some of these owners recycle the same losing coaches over and over again and dont get a chance to see the up and coming assistant coaches. Interviewing doesnt always equal hiring in that the interviewee can see what exactly the owner, GM or whomever is looking for in the hiring process and can step their game up accordingly.

I think it's dumb to have to interview a minority. If the top 5 guys are white, then why interview anyone but the top 5? Same goes for if the top 5 guys are black or Mexican or live in a damn igloo in Antarctica. The top guys for the job should be the ones getting interviews, regardless of race.

I agree, if a minority is qualified for the job, give them all fair and equal interviews, but I'm not crazy about interviewing a minority just for the sake of an interview.

Forget racism ... my wife got her current job because her present employer had been flagged in 1998 for hiring only men, and having a very low percentage of women in the workforce.

So in 1999, they tried to hire ONLY women ... and my wife knows she lucked out.

I have a problem with it. I have been involved with companies that had to keep a certain ratio to keep government contracts. During this process they could not hire a person who was well respected in the area because they needed to hire a minority. Companies and teams should be able to do what they wish to do. If there was a rash of monorities being hired should us white Americans stand up and complain. I already feel the white male is the most discriminated againt....
