Do you all know since I need 3 computers do I have to buy the software 3 times? I know I can call the company but wanted to see if any of you sharps knew a way around it before I plunk down $1000.

Thanks

To be legal, you either need 3 copies or a multi-license version.

Unfortunately yes. I have an architectural metal firm and we do autocad drawings for construction companies. Everytime I add someone i spend 3k on a new computer and 5k on another version of autocad 2008. So it could be worse, $300 ain't to bad.

What programs on the MS small business do you absolutely need? If you don't use publisher, just get the student edition, which includes three licenses for $125

Generally not a good idea for business use, but then using student editions would be equally illegal.

Hold on a second here. Are you talking about MS Small Business Server?

I'm not sure you need it at all. If you only have 3 machines, you very well may be able to get by with just a workgroup with nothing more tha 3 XP licenses.

What do you need SBS to do?

Okay, I think you're talking about MS Office Small Business Edition(A version of Office rather than a server OS that I had mentioned).

Totally different

try openoffice.org, is it not office but comparable and free.

what he said. openoffice has the exact same functionality and interface as office. you can open and save in office formats (.doc, .xls) and 95% of the time the formatting is perfect.

If you're not going to use Outlook as your email application, then openoffice is a great idea. I install it on all our old computers we give to charity and such, but when I order new computers I get the Small Business edition. I'm not sure on how much of a discount u can get with a license but if it's only 3 for now you might just wanna lay the ~1k (M$ is so greedy). But like the others said, openoffice is almost identical, I use it at home. And you could always download a free email application like Thunderbird (which I prefer over Outlook) but there isn't a calendar function on it (yet..)

If you know anybody going to college, Microsoft offers big discounts for schools and students. The bookstore there will have them much cheaper.
