Those Ugly Grizzlies Throwback Uniforms Were Matching Shorts Away From Being Awesome

Yeah, the Clippers beat the Grizzlies 98-91 last night. But what everyone really wanted to talk about afterward was the teams’ attire – specifically, what the Grizzlies were sporting. They’re the ones in the yellow-and-green numbers above. They were, like the Clippers’ uniforms, ABA throwbacks. Alas, the idea of mismatched-tops-and-shorts basketball uniforms is as bad now as it was in 1976.
Here’s what was different about the Grizzlies’ throwbacks, though: they were almost good. Green-yellow (or green-gold, whatever you want to call it) is a damn good color palette. For example, check these out. Pretty sharp, right? And if Memphis’ ABA team had only worn shorts that matched the tops, the Grizzlies could have been wearing the basketball version of those A’s jerseys last night, and we guarantee you wouldn’t have heard a word about how bad, or just plain weird, they looked. In fact, you might have even heard raves. (You would have from us.)
Don’t believe us? We also briefly consulted with someone more well-versed in these matters – Justin Fenner, fashion news editor at our sister site Styleite. We presented him with a simple two-part question: 1) fact or fiction: those Grizzlies uniforms are bad, and 2) fact or fiction: they wouldn’t be half bad if only the tops and shorts were both yellow. Justin’s response: “Fact and fact.” It goes to show how fine the line is between classic and atrocious uniforms…and why some throwback jerseys ought to stay in the past.
