Now here is what I want you to do. Wake up tomorrow morning, head to your local best buy and get yourself a slingbox...it will change your life.

My quality of life has increased somewhere between 4 and 6%.

Thanks,
Noonan

I got one as a gift and I honestly don't know what to do with it. I know the basic premise behind it, but I am having problems getting going with it.

It is hooked up to my cable box, and I have a home network. Am I supposed to start being able to watch TV on my laptop or something? Please don't make fun of me, I seriously want to know what to do with this thing.

I think the solo is HD compatible and the AV is not. I got the PRO and love it. Don't know about the 4 TVs. I think it is so you could also control your DVD player, etc. I bought a "slinglink" which allows uou to have your wireless internet connection in a different room than the slingbox and cable/satelite receiver - it has four connections in case you want to also hook up your game system and whatever else you need to connect to the internet.

Best bet is to set it up in a guest room or with whichever TV you use least. If I am watching my home TV through the slingbox at work (use extended desktop so my monitor has my work stuff and the laptop has TV) - my wife can't be watching that same TV unless she wants to watch excatly what I am watching.

Other things I love:

When you launch the slinbox player from your laptop - an image of your actual remote control comes up next to the screen and you can pause games, record, watch recorded events - whatever you could normally do.

The player optomizes the picture based on the speed of your internet connection -- mine is a bit blotchy, but fine at work (except after hours or early morning when all my lazy coworkers aren't here), but super sharp at home, airports, strabucks, etc.

You really can watch stuff on your pda or phone. This is how I got sold. I am at a wedding rehearsal dinner party with my wife and I know just about noone, so I start talking to this guy and see that he is watching a Friday night boise state game on his TREO, with great quality...I bought my slingbox within 12 hours.

The shit sandwhich is I have a blackberry 880 and slingbox only works on windows based mobile phones right now...apparently they are working on t. I can use my 880 as a modem for my laptop just anywhere sprint has coverage, so I have used my blackberry and laptop to have a game on in the car rolling on the freeway!

That's right, hook it up to the TV and your internet, then download the slingplayer and you are more or less good to go. I had a bit of trouble taking it to the next level which allows you to watch your TV on a laptop when you are not on your home network, but I gave them a call and their customer service was great, they walked me through everything and it works like a charm.

I use it to watch TV when I am shitting and shaving in the morning in the bathroom, working it out in the backyard, hitting the heavy bag in the garage, doing work at the office....picture quality is great....love it!

What kind of software download and how much. If I can get that with a decent picture I will be going to bestbuy TODAY.

Also, if my tv at home is in HD, if I get the HD model will it show up on HD on my laptop or phone?

Here is my problem. I can't hook it up to my home network (As far as I know) because I am wireless in the TV rooms. I have one desktop where the hard wire comes in, and it goes into a wireless router. There is not a TV anywhere nearby. I hooked it up to my TV, went to hook it up to my network, and it appears you need an internet cable to physically plug into the Slingbox. Is there any way I can get the Slingbox to grab my wireless network? :think2:

Harry, I had the same issue. If you plug one of these into your wireless router, it will send a wireless signal to the other one (the one next to your TV and slingbox).

The one pictured is a 4 port model, but you can get a 1 port one for cheaper...it is called a "slinglink"

SlingLink TURBO 4-port bundle enables network connections for multiple devices such as TiVo, satellite receiver, game console, or computer. You can expand your network and add up to 16 SlingLinks (up to 64 networked devices) throughout your house.

It may actually be free, I saw that they have released a couple beta versions on sling/treo forums...and also saw this

SlingPlayer on the Treo 650

There's been excitement in the Sling Media Forums as a few Palm Treo 650 owners have gotten SlingPlayer to work. The key appears to be the installation of Kinoma Player 4 EX and installing Sling Player which is only supposed to run on the Palm Treo 700p. By having two Kinoma files from the player installed it has allowed Sling Player to work.
I purchased Kinoma Player 4 EX and after a few adjustments I was able to view my SlingBox TV on my Treo 650 while on Verizon Wireless. You should have Bluetooth turned-off while running Sling Player Mobile for Palm. This combination of apps is not supported by Sling Media and they announced that they would hopefully develop Treo 650 support in the future without needing to buy the Kinoma files.

Looks pretty cool, I think this might have to be a must buy. I would love to watch TV/DVD while on a plane, sitting at work during a break, ect...

ECS - you will love it man! Even around the house it comes in handy. I also often pause or start to record games when leaving work and then catch up on them when I get home.

So you can access your TV at home from anywhere on your laptop? You don't have to be in a certain range of your home or slingbox?
