Agent Scott Boras Told Yankees They Needed $350 Million Offer for Meeting With Alex Rodriguez...

The Yankees were told by agent Scott Boras that they could not meet with Alex Rodriguez unless they presented an extension offer that guaranteed the star $350 million "as a floor."

Boras' remarks, first reported Friday by ESPN.com, were made Oct. 25 during a conversation between the agent and general manager Brian Cashman, a baseball official said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because those details were not made public.

Rodriguez had $81 million remaining over the final three years of his record $252 million, 10-year contract, and the deal contained an additional $10 million escalator. The Yankees were prepared to offer him an extension worth $25 million to $30 million a season for four or five years.

Boras then notified the Yankees on Sunday that the star third baseman was opting out of the contract to become a free agent.

Cashman declined to comment on the conversation, and Boras only would go into general details.

"We've made no offers to anyone and we have received no offers from anyone," Boras said. "I'm not going to respond."

New York said repeatedly that it would not negotiate with Rodriguez if he opted out.

"Brian's made it clear, and I've made it clear," Hank Steinbrenner, son of owner George Steinbrenner, said Friday.

I wish the owners had the balls to stand up to Boras and tell him where to stick his 350 million demand. How can you blame the players and agents asking for this kind of money when the owners will pay it?

Finally, someone who understands that the owners are the ones to blame. I hate AROD, but respect the hell out of Boras. He does is job better than almost anyone in any field.

I'd love to see the owners put a freeze on AROD and bring that salary down to a much lower number but it probably won't happen. One of the rich idiots will give him what he wants. No way I'd pay $30-40 million a year to a guy who has done zero in the post season for 3-4 years now.

Better yet, institute a salary cap like the NFL.

The owner's are scumbags. Most players and their agents are scumbags. The entire Mitchell report is one of the dumbest ways I've ever heard for a company to save face....the owners get to blame the players and keep their heads buried in the sand pretending they didn't know a thing.

I'm losing faith in the sport I've always held in the highest regard.

$350,000,000 to play a freakin' game. $100,000,000 is an outrageous amount...3.5X that much is nothing more than millions of fans taking it in the ass.

One last thing....Ed Hocules is on the juice.

Why else would you choose a person who was on the board for the Red Sox to lead the investigation?

Why else would a used-car salesman choose a politician to investigate?

... but the media is going to buy it ... and if it weren't for the San Francisco Chronicle, I doubt Mitchell would have found ANYTHING.

As for Boras, I think he has over-valued his client ... NOBODY will give him $350 million ... he took the Rangers to the cleaners once, and the Rangers got ridiculed ... even if someone wants him, they don't want to be the punch-line for a million jokes.

I don't think the Pittsburgh Pirates would pay him that. And I still LOVE the World Series where they beat the MIGHTY Yankees in 7! (Think about 1960 or thereabouts)

A-Rod is the most overpaid athlete in baseball IMHO. He puts up numbers year in and year out, but when the post season spotlight is on, he disappears. Being paid that kind of money, he should be a difference making player when the most important games are being played. The difference is he hurts his team in the post season.

Everyone sings the praises of open markets and capitalism until they see these sort of numbers being thrown around.

The fact is - he'll get the money, because there are teams who can afford it, and want those numbers in their lineup.

For those hoping the owners would all get together and agree not to deal with A-Rod, just watch how fast MLB loses their anti-trust exemption when they start colluding against high profile players.

I am sure he made the demand knowing that the Yankees weren't inerested in the first place. It is a way of putting himself in control.

Yankees were very interested in a contract extension. They really wanted him back. Except they weren't going to give him a 10 year extenxsion, just a max 6. Problem is, A-ROD never sat down with the Yankees and Boras barely did. It was clear all along that he was going to opt out no matter what. Giving the Yankees that starting point was basically saying fuck you, I hate NY.

Teams will just overpay Torri Hunter, Miguel Cabrera, Joe Crede, and others instead. Believe me, ARod brings more to the table than Jose Uribe at 4.5 mil.
