Amazing that this really happened in this very uppity part of town, but maybe not-this bar\steakhouse had a very abrasive reputation(2nd hand opinions)

Penny Parker: Elway indignant after bar cuts him off
Broncos Hall-of-Famer John Elway lost his thrill at Cherry Creek Grill.

There are conflicting versions of the story, but according to Elway, he and his girlfriend, Paige Green, along with pal Craig Andrisen arrived at the restaurant around 6 p.m. Wednesday and sat at the end of the bar.

Throughout the course of the evening the threesome ordered drinks (the number is under dispute) and appetizers

Several hours later, when Elway attempted to order another glass of wine, he was told by the bartender that management was cutting him off. According to the former Broncos quarterback, he asked to speak to the manager.

"I asked her for her card to find out what her name was," Elway told me. "I said to her ‘If that’s your policy (to refuse him another drink), then that’s the way it is but I’m not coming back.’ We had been there for hours, and I appreciated them taking care of me, but we were just sitting there having a discussion. We weren’t even being loud."

Anne Wheeler, the manager on duty, claims that Elway was served seven glasses of wine (a number he disputes) and was cut off when he tried to order an eighth. For the record, Andrisen says Elway was refused a fourth — not eighth — glass of wine and was told that he had to order food if he wanted an additional drink.

"(Elway) got upset and was in my face a little bit," Wheeler said. "He stood up and towered over me and pointed his finger in my face. I apologized, and said I was sorry to hear that he would never come back."
Both Elway and Andrisen deny the alleged intimidation. "I did not stick my finger in the girl’s face or try and intimidate her," Elway said. "It was a matter of discussing things. I said ‘If that’s your policy that’s your policy, but I’m not coming back.’"

Well, I'm about Elway's weight and could have 7 or 8 glasses with no problem but you have to wonder about getting involved in a public dispute while you are there with your girlfriend.

I guess he has no idea what could happen to his nest egg in a divorce.

I use to dread even driving by that area (Cherry Creek) when I did my apprenticeship for a bakery I would have to do deliveries every once in a while and delivered to that Grill. People in that area literally don't think there shit stinks. They will probably lose alot of business over that incident; Elway is like god in CO.

I could go for a burger from the Cherry Cricket right about now.

I wonder why he doesn't just go to Elway's steakhouse which is right in Cherry Creek.

Didn't even know he was divorced. In any case, Elway has always come off like a smug dickhead to me, not sure why. Seems like if you crossed paths with him, he would be the biggest asshole you would ever meet. I get the same vibes with Emmitt Smith as well.

The only problem I can think of is that if they saw Elway drive himself to the location...

Sure, they may lose business here, but what would the outcome be if Elway was killed in his own DD collision.

Still, if I'm the bartender or server, how can I get around management even keeping track here... the tab says how many drinks were served... if I'm in it for the tip... I gotta take it up with management myself.

Note to self-- don't go to Cherry Creek grill.

No shit. I have to suspect that there's more to this story(he does own his own steakhouse in Cherry Creek). It's corporate suicide to pull this crap on someone as high profile as Elway-it just makes no sense, especially the

"Several hours later, when Elway attempted to order another glass of wine, he was told by the bartender that management was cutting him off."

part of it. Give me a f'ing break. It's one thing if he was being a belligerent drunk, but that doesn't sound like it was the case at all here.

TT, you are likely close enough to the grill; get down there for us and see how many you can get in before they cut you off-we need to verify this situation asap.

Man. Celebritys just arent getting any love these days.

If I was the bartender and management did that I would be pissed because it screws me out of a potentially NICE tip.

If its my bar-- John Elway is allowed to drink however much he wants and then I have a bus boy drive him home.

Problem is restaurant people today think they are the celebrities and more important than superstar athletes. Elway hanging out at your bar has to be great for business.

If I owned Cherry Creek Grill, I fire whoever the managers were on this night.

About 20 years ago when I was living in Golden Co., I went out for the evening and when walking to my car in the parking lot, some college kids had car trouble and asked me for a ride. I said sure. Pile in and where do you live? Cherry Creek. OK just tell me where to go. They then explained that was where all the rich ass-holes in Denver lived. Dropped them off and while I was trying to get out of the neighborhood a cop pulls me over. Right from the start I knew it was not good when he asked "What are you doing here"? The Arapahoe County Jail is not a place I would recommend to stay in for the weekend... Maybe I should have told the guards to bring me my wine or I'm not coming back...

I can only imagine what kind of bender John went on after his kid threw 7 int's yesterday in the 2nd round of the high school playoffs.

Pretty safe to say that I know where he didn't go :nohead:
