Interesting, been listening to NY sports radio (WFAN) and various sources have stated that the Yankees are talking to AROD again after cutting off contact and are close to a deal.

This time they don't want Scott Boras involved.

In a surprise twist, Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees are discussing a deal that could put the superstar third baseman back in pinstripes.
The discussions are believed to be centering on a 10-year contract for about $280 million. They are also likely to include incentives that could put the total package well over $300 million.
A-Rod and the Yankees have been talking secretly for a couple days in an attempt to reconcile. It appears that progress is being made.
"Alex reached out to us,'' Yankees partner Hank Steinbrenner told SI.com on Wednesday. "He wants to be a Yankee.''
Rodriguez, who opted out of his contract last month and became a free agent, said he wanted to talk with the Steinbrenner family before he started discussions with other franchises and that he wanted to remain with the Yankees. It was not immediately known whether the discussion took place in person or by telephone. Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, did not participate.
Rodriguez and the Yankees appeared to have parted ways two weeks ago when the Yankees bid him adieu after he opted out of his 10-year, $252-million contract on Oct. 28. Before Rodriguez terminated the deal, Boras told the Yankees they would have to make a $350 million offer to get a meeting with the third baseman. However, both sides appear to have had a change of heart, and contract talks were intense on Wednesday.
The Yankees were approached by a third-party intermediary several days ago who said Rodriguez wanted to speak with the Steinbrenners, and the team at first wondered whether the message was serious.
The New York Daily News first reported news of the new discussion on Wednesday on its Web site. Rodriguez confirmed it with a statement on his own Web site later in the day.
By opting out of the contract, Rodriguez forfeited the $72 million he was guaranteed by the Yankees for 2008-10. In turn, the Rangers were relieved of their obligation to pay New York $21.3 million, a subsidy agreed to as part of the 2004 trade that sent A-Rod to the Yankees.
Rodriguez told the Yankees that he understood what he would have to do if he wanted to rejoin the team: Make up for the subsidy from Texas that New York lost when he opted out.
Before Rodriguez opted out, the Yankees were prepared to make an initial extension offer of four or five years with an average salary of $25 to $30 million.
After Rodriguez became a free agent many possible suitors said they weren't interested. The Los Angeles Angels were an exception, saying they would like to speak with Rodriguez.

Apparently he grossly overestimated the market for AROD. Not many teams showed interest in the type of contract he wanted. I've heard the Angels never even considered him to begin with, and that was Boras hype. Now AROD realizes that the only large cash out there is from the Yankees.

Don't believe his statement.

After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization.

Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.

As a result, I reached out to the Yankees through mutual friends and conveyed that message. I also understand that I had to respond to certain Yankees concerns, and I was receptive and understanding of that situation.

Cynthia and I have since spoken directly with the Steinbrenner family. During these healthy discussions, both sides were able to share honest feelings and hopes with one another, and we expect to continue this dialogue with the Yankees over the next few days.

He's reaching out because that's where the only check is, not because he's happy.

A-Rod must fire Boras! (Which we would all like to see)

Excluding Boras would violate agreement

FOXSports.com, Updated 1 hour ago

The Yankees will be in violation of baseball's collective-bargaining agreement if they exclude agent Scott Boras from their negotiations with his client, Alex Rodriguez.

"That clearly is a violation of the Basic Agreement," Michael Weiner, the general counsel of the players' union, told FOXSports.com on Wednesday.

"Once a player designates an agent, a club cannot refuse to meet with that agent."

Rodriguez, a free agent, is again discussing a contract with the Yankees, according to the New York Daily News. The team wants to bypass Boras in the negotiations, the Daily News says.

"We will not negotiate with Scott Boras," a Yankees source told the paper. "He cannot be in the room."

However, Yankees officials likely know that they cannot exclude Boras, sources say.

The Yankees can avoid Boras only if Rodriguez fires the agent and chooses either to represent himself or pick another representative.

Rodriguez gives no indication that he is ready to fire his longtime agent.

The POS is such a loser, he struck out in the OFF SEASON.

The "without Boras" line is just a way for both parties to save face ... nothing else.

Boras and A-Rod are both smart IMO. Boras is the best agent in the game because he almost always gets more than his players' are worth.

I'd rather get a job at $20/hour than get a job at $17/hour. I can't really fault A-Rod for getting the most money possible. It's not like the owners aren't making crazy amounts of money as well.

He screwed them over so they should not negotiate.

Personally I think people look at situations like this the wrong way.

If you were working for $20/hr, and had a chance to check around the market cause you know you can get $28/hour, wouldn't you? All the while knowing your old job would offer $25/hour for you to come back?

People say these ballplayers are overpaid but they bring in so much cash to the owners that they are just being paid for what they can bring in...

No, Boras screwed them over by telling the Yankees to either put a $350 million dollar on the table as a starting point or we're opting out.

The Yankees said that was ridiculous, and he opted out.

A-Rod today basically said fuck you to Scott Boras because he's all but finalized this deal WITHOUT him. (Yankees wouldn't negotiate with Boras).

Cincy - How is Boras saving face? He looks like a laughing stock right now when his marquee client had to do things on his own. What type of trust does that show in an agent? In fact, I can't think of anything worse to lose your reputation as a sports agent. I agree that A-ROD is saving face by sucking it in and initiating talks with New York (or else he'd look like a greedy pusssy, not able to make decisions on his own), but if this deal gets done Boras looks like a JOKE and a FRAUD.

What choice does Boras have? Nobody else is going to pay Arod ... so what now?

The way it is now, Boras' will still get his cut of the $250 million ... and that would be anywhere from $8-$15 million ... if Arod changes agents right now, Boras gets ZIPPO.

You are right about Boras' reputation ... this is damaging ... but this is the best Boras can do ... he fuckt it up and he needs to save it ... and even if he can't save his reputation, he can still get his cut ... and he can tell potential clients that he planned it all for Arod ... you think a dumb jock like JD Drew who hasn't even seen a day of college wouldn't believe him?
